Fellow Hogs, I am asking for your advice and critique in regards to my efforts to restore a badly damaged photo for a friend of a friend. Attached is the original and my attempt at restoring it. I am sure that many of your are far more skilled than I am at this.
I am wondering what to charge and whether or not this could be done much better. How would you handle this with the customer, given that I am not a pro, but did put some serious time into this, and will continue to try to improve it further by removing more of the small blemishes that remain. I tried to get the color better, but this seems to be the best I can do with that aspect of it.
Thanks in advance.
The index finger of the girl on the right is wrong. The end of that finger is actually shown on the image. The finger should be bent, not straight out.
I think you did a good job with the colors.
Oh, yes. I would whiten the teeth and whites of the eyes a bit more.

Other than the girls index finger I think you did a hell of a salvage job.
Pretty good job but as was said the finger looks weird.
One thing to know...sometimes discretion is the better part of valor...if you have a wicked color cast and your finished product doesn't look great (color wise) then convert to B&W....that fixes a multitude of sins.
Wow, thank you for the replies. I agree totally that the girl's finger doesn't look right. I'll have to try again to see if I could do better. I tried to whiten the eyes and teeth more, but could not get it to look right. I'll have to get away from it for a while and go back and try again.
Thanks again to both of you!
Thanks, rpavich, I appreciate your feedback. I'll try again to see if I can do better on the finger. Also on slightly whitening the eyes & teeth a bit.

Do you mind if I show you the B&W version? It really hides a lot of issues.
I wanted to do a B&W but the client is only interested in B&W.
The client does not want B&W, I though of that too, but thanks.

Sure, please do. I need all the good info I can get. Thanks.
Ok....keep in mind...this was a 10 minute job.
Convert to B&W
fix face dark patches.
Fix a few white spots
Fix hand.
Recrop to get rid of too much head room.
That's it...but it's just for demo purposes.

That's fine..but you might have to educate them a bit...in my opinion, a nice B&W looks a lot better than a badly done "colorized" image.
To each his own though.
You did great, and I completely agree with the idea, but not my decision. I'll probably do a B&W version anyway, once I finish and get it the best color version I can, and give him both. Thanks.
BTW, rpavich did with the hand exactly what I would have done.
