Instead of trying to recover shadow detail you should consider taking the same shot twice, exposing once for the sky and once for the foreground. Your result will look much cleaner!!

I did that art grandpa but I don't know how to use PS to blend the two. Also, I recently had a HDD crash and can't seem to find the foreground exposed shot. My luck. I am learning PS as much as possible but for now, I am just using LR5. Thanks for the suggestions.

Just look up Photoshop masks. They seem difficult at first but you'll get the hang of them with practice. You could easily use the polygonal lasso tool to roughly select around the land's top edge and use a bit of gaussian blur on the mask to make the transition smooth and cover up any mistakes you made.

You have gotten some good advice here drg. I use Elements 11 which doesn't have all the bells and whistles of LR5, etc. but it does a fairly good job. I started with a levels adjustment, then selected the sky with quick select (probably should have feathered the selection just a bit...but forgot. Then with the sky selected I added a bit of blue and played with the brightness and contrast. Then I clicked on "inverse" to select the bottom half (landscape) and just made slight adjustments (levels and brightness/contrast). You did a nice capture here and any of our edits are what we imagine you saw and also are what we like. Once we make adjustments it is sort of an art and is an individual perception. Some of us (me included) are more artsy than others. That is not a negative or positive statement...just a fact. A fun exercise by the way.

I like the composition of this shot but that is about it. See what you can do with it and let me know what you did. The color, exposure, noise, contrast and WB seem to be off. If I correct the exposure of the foreground using the graduated filter in LR5 (and using the histogram and my eye to confirm it), it still seems off to me. When I correct the WB still off. I haven't totally given up on it yet but I wanted to see what my UHH masters can do with it. This is learning for me. Thanks. Also this is straight from the camera. Any edits I made were reset which is why I know how it seems to be off.

Please post your edits as originals.

Here is my attempt also. Workflow was all over the place. I tried to create 2 layers, sky & ground, but I injected some feathering into the selections which caused a nice blank spot where the 2 came together. I still used both selections but also turned the original back on underneath to hide the gap in the middle.
