I buy Extra medium.

That's the trouble with most places. Either they don't have Medium, or they have it in a color that no one wants. I kept one Cabelas shirt, but it wrinkled more, and the inner pockets were too small.

How does that "rod holder loop" work?

Not just that item. A lot of 5.11 stuff has the same top price.

I'm sure that's a typo, as I've never seen it before, nor have I seen it anywhere else.

And they were on sale. I ordered 1 blue and 1 white and will pick them up in the store in a week or so. I may get them embroidered.

Not a typo, if we can extra large & extra small, why not an extra medium? (lol)

I have to wonder if the sunscreen properties of "special" shirts are over-hyped. I cannot recall ever being burned while wearing a long-sleeved shirt.

As for insect repellent: the world's best-kept secret seems to be permethrin. It is a repellent that is applied to clothing. It is sprayed on enough to dampen the fabric and then allowed to dry (it has a faint smell when damp but not after it dries). It is effective for about 4 weeks and even through a few washes. Some of the hunting stores carry the small spray cans which will cover two sets of clothing (shirts, pants, socks). Amazon has the best deal - http://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Permethrin-Clothing-Repellent-24-Ounce/dp/B001ANQVYU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380274351&sr=8-1&keywords=sawyer%27s+permethrin Everyone who lives where Lyme disease is a problem should apply this to socks and pants starting in the springtime. I use this before packing whenever I go to tropical areas where malaria, dengue, Yellow Fever, and other things are a problem, then just carry the DEET "wipes" to use on exposed skin if I am aware of mosquitoes being around. Most of the wipe products are not greasy. I have used "Ultrathon", which is perhaps the best DEET product on the market, but it is like applying Crisco, and I definitely don't want greasy fingers while handling my camera and lenses!

My favorites are from Orvis, and I have several. They are fly fishing shirts and have large front pockets that hold lenses, 12 oz bottles of water etc. They have smaller pockets on the front of the larger ones. The sleeves have smaller pockets which are great for your extra battery, memory cards, and filters. The sleeves roll up and are held in place by straps. I use them a lot both for photography and fly fishing, and are great on trips.

My doctor recommended a product called Sun Guard that you put into the washing machine with clothes that increases their sun blocking ability. I use it once a year.

Thanks for the link to permethrin. I've added it to my Amazon Wish List (Item #97).

Me and my staff work right in the heart of the Dengue fever issue in southeast Florida. I issue them Off Deep Woods towelettes to use. Non-greasy and folded flat so a half dozen fits easily in a shirt pocket. Works good too. Aslo, had a forensic entomologist (bug guy) recommend Johnson's waterbabys suntan lotion, in the pink bottle, protects from sun, moisturizes and keeps skeeters away. Unlike Avon skin so soft which after a short time becomes an attractent this does not.

Will look in to permethrin spray, and will be ordering 2 of the 10,000 shirts. BTW permethrin is also used for lice in prescriptions, rinse and cream..

We get lots of questions about what photo equipment to bring on a trip and how to pack it. Another consideration is what to carry on our person when traveling or out shooting. For that, you need special clothing.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post about searching for the perfect travel shirt, and many of you offered suggestions. I wanted no-iron, long sleeve, two chest pockets with two security pockets under them, and a pocket on the left sleeve.

I tried half a dozen, and I settled on the one I prefer. It's a 5.11 TacLite. The pocket on the sleeve holds just two pens, and the large, hidden pockets on the chest are secured by Velcro. I would have preferred a regular pocket on the sleeve and zippers for the hidden pockets, but I can live with this. The shirt lists for up to $75, but, depending on size and color, I've found it selling for as low as $28.

http://www.amazon.com/5-11-TacLite-Professional-Sleeve-Medium/dp/B002AMTUYS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380196955&sr=8-1&keywords=5.11+taclite+long+sleeve

The runner-up was the Serengeti Safari II, from Cabelas. It had the pocket on the sleeve and zippers on the security pockets, but these hidden pockets were small. Most hidden pockets are very large - good for holding boarding passes. Unfortunately, the chest pockets were secured by not one, but two buttons each. Not a good idea. It was rather heavy "cotton canvas," and it came out of the dryer pretty wrinkled. I'll keep it and use it, though.

I would have liked built-in sunscreen and insect repellant, but they are not offered on these shirts.

I wish! The pink was sold out. :D

I got a dark green from Amazon, and a black on ebay. It's amazing how the prices vary according to size and color. Also, you can't assume that they will have the size you want, let alone the color. I'm holding out for a lighter color, but I don't want to pay any more than I have to.

Well, they are available in a multitude of colors. Don't know why they show only 3 colors, for I have teal, white, yellow, brown, orange and blue. They are fishing shirts, and designed primarily for stream fishing. The idea with the rod holder is that you stick the reel end of the pole in your waders and use the loop to hold the rod next to your body, freeing both hands to change lures in the middle of the stream without getting your equipment wet. Ideal for fly fishing.

But, I'm not a fisherman. I first started wearing the shirts when I rode my Harley. Cool in the heat. Ventilated to keep you comfortable. Dries very quickly if it rains on you. I continue to wear them for the comfort.

Okay, that makes sense.
