"Burn" around bright spot

I was trying to get a shot of the harvest moon this week, when I got the result shown. Is this a common issue to get a dark ring around a bright object? What causes this and how can it be prevented? (Nikon D90 with no filters). Thanks

Your Moon is not only a bright object here, it is way over exposed so it is blown out!
You were metering with several points probably so the camera did what it could with all the conflicting info it was getting from the sensor.
Looks very noisy, did you have your ISO way up?

Thanks Tuscon, I think you've got it.

Think of the moon as a direct reflection of the sun. Just like on a beach. For example ISO 100 1/500 f/8. This is a rough example but try it if you have another clear night. Shoot in manual mode and bracket. Auto exposure will not work at that focal length since the camera is factoring in all the dark sky and causing the setting to severely overexpose the moon as was already stated.
