If someone posts a poorly done photo, you do not have to respond, you can say something positive that has nothing to do with the photo, but you shouldn't tell them it's great, when it is not. That is unfair to them, and not very helpful.

Brent Harder has indicated to me that he always wants my honest opinion. That's why I felt it was okay to say what I said about this photo even though it is in the photo gallery.

You were correct Nightski, you responded to his request. It would seem the Bmac needs to tend to Bmacs business and stay away from others.

My post to Nightski was in response to her statement, which I quoted, and seems to be misinterpreted. It was an attempt to explain why some may not appear honest when commenting on photos, namely, because they have not been asked to critique the image, therefore do not.

Nowhere in my post did I refer to Brent nor to any critique Nightski did or did not give to him. So I have no issue with Ms Nighski, nor did I have.

So perhaps it is you, Up-To-It, who needs to tend to his own business and give some thought to what others have said prior to butting in. Have a fine day. 8-)

I really did want to focus on the topic I started. UHH is a site with so much great potential for helping people to learn. I wouldn't want to be nasty to anyone, but I do feel that when people are told that they've got a great photo, when obviously they do not it's just as insulting as if you did say something nasty. Wouldn't it be better to not say anything at all, or to say, "Gosh, looks like you had a beautiful day to shoot.", than to give a false compliment. It is not only dishonest, but it may be confusing to new photographers.

I don't think that it's ever good to just say, that's a bad shot. But, wouldn't it be helpful to say, gee, if you'd been at F18 instead of F8, you may have had a greater dof, and therefore more of your photo would be in focus? You could even combine that with some things you liked about the photo. Wouldn't that be better than completely whitewashing the situation?

At the risk of being long winded, I'd just like to add one more thing. As a new photographer, who is starting to get a good shot now and then, I am not sure if someone that gives me compliments is just doing it because they are scared not to, or if they really mean it. It's kind of like giving all the kids a trophy or a ribbon at an athletic event. It takes the great moment away from the child that really earned it. That doesn't mean we can't encourage the children who didn't earn it, but it's not right to tell them they "rocked it out" when they didn't. It robs the winner, and it discourages the drive to improve.

Dpullum, you really are an insulting, patronising, nasty old man aren't you?
And I am totally astounded that you have the nerve to call anyone else at all egocentric.
And what is with the wrapping nasty comments up in a non disguised apology??
Well, I am very sorry too dpullum. I am sorry that you are a nasty senile old egotistical idiot who has been taking photos for 50 years and still takes crap photos.
I thought we agreed that you did not have the skill level or photographic ablility or knowledge to make your comments of any value.

My dear Nightski, Indeed I did read your post and by now I should be applying my training in special education techniques and not reply replying beyond the minimum to your comments. My apologies for not recognizing the problems and replying more skillfully.

If you had read your own post you would have seen: "The light here is mesmerizing. I can't say I have the skill to do this, but it would be what I would want to shoot for." This quote implies or infers (slight difference in word meaning) that there was a hint of an inquiry by you regarding the techniques used in photographing glass bottles. Sorry for my misinterpretation of your, so I thought, clear statement. Additionally Nightski, it is not all about you, tho others consider you ego-centric, I never have. My comments on techniques were aimed to all reading this post and viewing the "Mesmerizing" photos. There are others who may read this post who would benefit from my comments or add to each others techniques and comments of their own. Clearly that would be a mistake if they were to read the OP correctly. Again sorry, but my interpretation of UHH is that we share techniques again, I must be mistaken or misshapen in my view. Rather it is to vitriolic, but I think not. I take a positive view of UHH people.

In the future if you only want kudos and admiration for your posting... add the phrase "positive admiration comments only .... please, no details" thus your ego will gain with out technical changeling. By now I should have learned, again I apologize for inserting technique in an OP that just was your comment and directions to view. A find you amazing indeed you will never change, a sign of strength of character. Nothing will change my degree of admiration for you.

May I mention that you did not reference :
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-149340-1.html in the OP! only in your reply to my comment. Sorry I failed mind reading 101.

You may reply to this if you wish but you are on my not watch list....poof, gone. What a waste of time.. I apologize to you and myself.

Bet being on your ignore (not watch) list is the greatest disappointment in Nightski's life in the last NANO-SECOND. Poor soul might take up the bottle as the post was about bottles.

Someone posted a photograph of bottles recently. Everyone was being nice, giving compliments. I just couldn't see it. If you're going to post a Still Life, where you are trying to use the light in an effective way, this is what I would expect. Here is a link to a photograph of bottles that really works. The light here is mesmerizing. I can't say I have the skill to do this, but it would be what I would want to shoot for.

Just ran across this post and read all the comments... All I can say is "Wow"... I recently took some bottle shots and am always willing to accept critique even if I do not agree..
I would actually appreciate some on my bottle shot in this post which is also on the darker side...
