I just received a refurbished by Canon a Canon Macro 100mm f/2.8 IS USM lens. To test this lens I took it to the newly opened Butterfly Wonderland venue in Scottsdale, AZ. I use a Canon 50D and a 580EX flash at 1/3 power. Since I was just experimenting, I disregarded the condition of the butterfly wings etc. just to get practice and to see how the lens performed. I attach three photos from that test shoot. If you care to comment, please do. Thanks.

Nikonian, as you are clearly aware, these are not true macro photos; rather, they are some interesting close-ups. More to the point, who appointed you to be the marco rules police? Like many, I have begun to tire of your continual efforts to be in control of everyone here. Give it a rest, and let other members enjoy this site at their leisure.
Perhaps you failed to notice that this was the OP's first attempt using a macro lens, and not a post of macro photographs in general. Is it really so important for you to be right that you find it necessary to assert your opinions every time someone among us fails to show up the exact way you want us to?
Very nice pictures. Looks like the lens is doing fine.

Clixpix.
I think they are super, everyone except one person likes them, that tell's a story in my book. If I had taken the photographs I'd be dead chuffed (very pleased) with how they have turned out. Don't be downhearted, offended or disappointed they are lovely. I wish I'd taken them. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Thanks to all who replied to the butterfly photos. I appreciate the nice comments. I have been shooting close-up/macro for many years with my Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM, non IS.
I find that my personal suspension system is getting quite soft so I opted for the L-IS version of the lens. I have not posted in the macro section as my shots were not as sharp as I wanted them to be. Hopefully the IS on this L macro lens will improve my keep rate and I will post on the macro section.

I merely extended an invitation to a new macro lens owner to view the
True Macro-Photography Forum.
Any interpretation beyond that is on you.

You did a good job with the flash.......I like the third one best because you can't really see what the flash has done to the butterfly and a little sunlight has come onto the wings too. I'm sure you LOVE you macro lens!

You are most welcome to participate in the
True Macro-Photography Forum. There are several fellow macro-photographers who use the same Canon 100-mm lens, so you have the opportunity to share equipment insights and capture techniques.
Your shakedown cruise turned out OK.
