Okay guys! I haaaave to figure out this problem today, I have a prom photo shoot next Saturday and I am building my portfolio, which this shoot is very important, because I am going to market towards HS Seniors! So I uploaded a picture yesterday, it was my first edit in LR5, I shot in RAW and Jpeg. It looks grainy, snowy on my sons hair and eyelashes, especially, but it looks like that in my Hard drive folder, not when uploaded it here! It looks better here? I don't understand, I thought it was because I was shooting in Jpeg and editing in Picasa, but I edited that pic in LR5 and shot in RAW. I will post some different pics today, and hopefully someone can help me figure this out. It is not my monitor, because my pics from previous shoots do not look like that! Thank You! Gina

Hi Gina, this image has the appearance of a degree of over processing. It appears that you have lightened the shot overall and done some fairly serious sharpening to try to recover the slightly out of focus subject which would explain the "snowiness" that you complain of. Can you kindly post the original of this shot for further evaluation? Cheers, Rob.

You are out of focus, your focus point was about four feet in front of him. Make sure you on single focal point. If the boy was you object of focus that is.

Boy is OOF *out of focus*
Highlights pushed up pretty far. Enough that its causing more noise than need be.

1/500th
ISO 200
f4.5
Spot Metered

Is the EXIF data.

Technically its fine, your post production is the cause of the noise. Lightroom 5 has a noise reduction feature. Try it. Had the focus been spot on for the childs head/back you would have had something pretty good. Pay attention to your focus point in camera but also on the subject.

At 100% crop this file is no more noisy than most other iso 200 shots from a T3i or similar camera make/model. Sadly noise is something we have to deal with in digital as we edit our images. The harsher the editing task or manipulation of light, the more likely it can cause unwanted noise.

Again, its a good step in the right direction.

Composition is beautiful but the post is overdone. I have found that any edit should be done at 100%.

You have taken on a project without knowing how to do it and now you are in trouble. You obviously do not know your equipment, and are not proficient enough to do quality work. Your first experience in LR5. Why do you shoot RAW and JPG. Why bother with JPG. Everyone wants to get the most exotic software, and not know how to use. If you had started using Elements first, you would be amazed what elements can do, it is easy to use, and will probably do everything you want it to do.
You will not get anyone on this web site to help you with all your problems that you should have learned long before this. Have fun.

Is not this forum to learn? Huh, that's funny, I thought it was. I do not have "the best" equipment, I have a T3i and LR5, that is beginners, trying to learn as much as I can, and figure out this problem. I am sorry that I "bothered" you with my inexperience!

CTHAHN - would you keep your nasty and ignorant observations to yourself? We have a serious question here from a poster looking for help and that help is being generously offered by many helpful and willing people.
As I wrote only yesterday

http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-148957-1.html#2515509

you have posted only one question which, if you have only a bit of the experience you'd like us to think you have, was an ignorant and stupid one. But your comments, all in the same vein as this piece of nastiness, run to FOURTEEN PAGES!
Anyone wanting to view your impressive history has only to click on your pseudonym above your avatar to go to where your posts are and even read them all. You can't hide here. Go somewhere else.
Mike.

GinaP, There are a few bad apples here, as in most baskets. For the majority, you have to admit that most of the post have been constructive and informative. You can click on any posters name, and then go look at there messages. That will tell you a lot about what there putting in there post. Ignore it. Like a pimple on the butt. It does go away.

Gina - I'm outraged by cthahn's reply to you. It was absolutely inexcusable.

As a result I've sent it a Personal Message to desist from now or face a complaint and request from me, and anyone else who'd care to support me, to the Moderator.

Would anyone who feels like joining me please send me a Personal Message to say so? I'd advise you all to follow the link in my comment above and then to have at least a brief look at the mentioned posts so you know exactly what I'm going on about.

I just can't bring myself to apologise to anyone on cthahn's behalf but my sympathy is with you.

Mike.

I must say that I did wonder about the liquid in cthahn's cornflakes this morning!! That nasty edge helps no one and Mike Gallagher is quite right that it has no place in a learning environment!
Part of the learning process in forums is learning how to ask the "right" question... Not easy to know what info those with more experience will need to give you the help you are asking for. Most responses in this forum provide guidance in the form of looking for more specific info about the shot which helps the learner know what to look at when thing go sideways.

GinaP, please don't let this rather rotten apple color your view of the group. It is and has been for me, one of the most consistently good & positive photography forums I read.

Mike G - thank you reminding us that chivalry is not dead and your excellent response.

Mike is absolutely right. Some people have an amazing knack for being a jerk. Please forgive and ignore them.

Gina, your composition is impeccable. Working in bright sunlight can be tricky, so I try to double and triple check my focus when I'm doing it. Good luck with your prom shoot. Since your subjects will probably be antsy and excited, back up your images by taking multiple images. Bits and bytes are cheap.

It was worth saying twice. I have only recently noticed his postings, but they jump out like a dead fish in a wedding cake. There is never a good excuse for bad behavior. I also sent a PM to you and to him.
