Good JPEG; Bad JPEG

I have recently returned from an all too brief trip to the mountains where I made Oh So Many pictures of trees and creeks and streams and hills and waterfalls and mountains! I loaded all photos from my Canon 60D and Hubby’s Canon SX50 to my computer. Then, visually impaired Hubby asked that we view them on the big screen TV so he could help me select the better ones for keepers.

I copied all the JPEG files back to an SD card and put it in the slot on the TV. All photos show as thumbnails. But, when I select individually or do a slideshow, the photos made with the 60D will not show – I get a message that says “File Cannot Be Read”. All the photos made with the SX50 can be viewed full screen with no problem.

Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong or what I should be doing differently? Thanks for any advise.

Did you shoot the 60D photos via RAW? If so, thats the problem TV cannot read RAW files. If they were not shot raw, chances are that it just copied thumbnails only and not the full file.

Are you sure the files from the 60D are JPG?? Maybe they are CR2 (raw) files that the TV can't read??

With the 60D, I shot in both RAW and JPEG but only copied the JPEG files back to the SD card to load on TV. And I just checked the card again to be sure I hadn't done it backwards. I did shoot the "Large" JPEG. Might the file be too large?

With the SX50, the photos were shot in JPEG only (will that camera shoot RAW?).

Yes, the SX50 will shoot RAW, but not in the "A" or automatic mode. Set it to P, T, A and it will shoot JPG, RAW+JPG or RAW.

Maybe the TV has a limit to how big the files can be. Try resizing them and then try again.

Thanks for your help. I'll try resizing. I have not yet delved into any editing as I'm still trying to learn the camera. Guess it's time to broaden my horizons. (My son is in his 4th year at college, majoring in Communications with a concentration in film editing -- he should be able to help me with this -- right? He has so little patience for Mommy's little hobby.)

The SX50 is Hubby's and he has threatened to break the fingers/arms of anyone who moves his camera off of "Auto" so I don't suppose his will ever shoot in RAW. (Well, at least not until I get more familiar with mine and then decide to branch out.)

FastStone Photo Resizer is a very good FREE program for resizing batches of photos.

Thanks. I have the software that came with the camera and have loaded it on my computer but have not explored its capabilities. I bought PSE 11 when I bought my camera and have not even loaded it on my computer yet. Surely PSE will resize? I've just GOT to branch out! My poor brain. It just hurts so bad.

What you do not mention, are you using the came card?

If yes...
How do you transfer your files from one device to another?
Can a program like PSE read them? If yes, best bet is to copy them using PSE. If no, the problem lies somewhere I cannot identify.

If no...
Can PSE read them using a direct connection with the camera?
If so, transfer everything onto your hard disk and format the thrice cursed thing, you are dealing with a 'secure' storage card.
If PSE cannot try with the camera manufacturer...
If this does not work, check the CARD manufacturer web site.

Passed this stage, w/o physical access I have no clue.

The JPEG files from the SX50 and the 60D were copied from my computer to the same SD card using Window's copy feature. The images are readable on the Canon Software that is loaded on my computer. I used said SD card to load all of the photos onto Hubby's computer which has PSE 11 installed and all photos loaded onto his computer and are accessible by PSE. There is no apparent problem with the SD card.

I guess I'm just gonna have to dig out the TV info to see if there are file size limitations. And then, by golly, learn at least a little bit about editing software.

Thanks for your attention and suggestions.

Silly question but if you have a laptop, did you consider using the TV as a second screen using the HDMI or VGA connections?

I use a PC to run NETFLIX and other streaming to the TV... So why not just look at images?

Our smart TV, less than a year old, went kaplooey just before we left on our trip nine days ago, hubby had extensive oral surgery today and I just have not yet made time to look into a warranty repair. The other big screen TV doesn't have built-in WiFi; all electronic cables just seem to disappear into the chaos of my son's room. Probably the simplest solutions would be waiting for him to get home, dig out the cable, and do as you suggest. Thanks for reminding me that I have that option.

My TV will play a card too but I find it to be slow and cumbersome. I use my laptop to play on the tv and its much better.

You do not understand the basics of digital photography. How did you take the original JPGS. AT what resolution or quality. Every time you take a JPEG, information is lost or thrown away.
Transfering it back to a SD card looses more information. For a better answer you have to give all the information as to what you did.
