Pet Peeves

I thought that I would start a thread of what I personally consider as my pet peeves. However, IMHO, as it applies to me these are more just "pets".

The three major ones that I have to do with driving in the DC metro area. Is anyone surprised?

The first one that gets me going is when I'm driving along a two labe road and start to see a sign that says "Right (or Left) lane Closed Ahead" from 1-1/2- 2 miles away. As I get closer the warning is given again but this time "Prepare to Merge" is added.

I actually believe what the warning signs say and merge into the driving lane well before I reach teh construction truck.

HOWEVER, there is always someone else or several someones else who believe that they are more privileged or more important and continue to drive in the upcoming closed lanes until they are up against the construction truck and once again feel that they are more important and more privileged expecting those of us waiting in line to let them in.

The second major peeve that I have is when fellow drivers refuse to use that thing sticking out of the left side of the steering column aptly called a "Turn Signal Indicator" Those things are standard equipment on all modern automobiles and are included at no extra cost.

Actually, I believe that it's written into the traffic code that drivers are supposed to use those things.

Life and traffic flow would be much smoother if other drivers knew in advance that someone was about to turn right or left or someone wanted to merge into my lane. I for one have never hesitated to let someone who uses his turn signal indicator to merge in front of me. Other times I have had to brake hard to avoid rear ending the driver who doesn't. I feel that many other drivers feel the same way.

Now add the disregard for merging traffic signs and not using that thing on the left side of the steering column well before a driver is up against the stopped construction truck on the closed lane and what do you have.

My third peeve is when someone decides to "ride my ass" by tail gating as close has they can. Ever wonder why there are so many front/rear fender benders as you go about your routine day behind your steering wheel?

What are your pet (or no so pet) peeves. This doesn'thave to be limited to driving because I think the most polite drivers that I have ever shared a road with are the Australians and the Europeans. How do you guys do it?

Those who can't talk on their phones and drive at the same time and those who drive 30 mph in a 60 mph zone.

Little old ladies, (sorry I don't mean to be stereotypical but it does tend to be little old ladies), who pack their shopping at the supermarket on top of their purse.

People using umbrellas who quickly change direction, sweeping an instrument with 8 metal points at eye level, without a thought about who they might blind.

The first two of his peeves don't bother me too much, but the 3rd one (above) does... BUT let me tell a tale of Fun and almost mayhem..

When I was MUCH younger and a whole lot bolder, I was taking and picking up my brother in Law to work every day due to his car being inoperable... and had to go through Cocoa, Florida both ways. The Cocoa Police (not a police basher before you holler) had a bad habit of coming up right behind you with their bright lights on and staying that way all through town (13 stop lights then) I can only assume that they were hoping to irritate the driver into speeding or something.....

One night I had gotten my beater car, a 1960 Borg Ward running and was in it. As I came into town the obligatory police car pulled in behind me with bright lights blinding me.... I was not in a good mood that night and decided I "Wasn't going to take it any more...lol" I checked that there wasn't any oncoming traffic and pressed my head back hard against the head rest and locked my brakes...

The police car managed to not hit me, but did not manage to avoid running over the curb and getting stuck in the sand. I stopped, ran over to the police car and inquired to his health.... he began screaming at me, he was gonna bury me in the jail, and such. I stood there and he finally sort of stopped long enough to inquire as to why I had hit my brakes so hard,,,,

By this time there were 3 other police cars surrounding us and three Police men standing there, hands on Pistols and evil looks on their faces....

I calmly said.. Well, for some reason I was blinded by very bright lights in my mirror and as a result almost missed seeing that large dog running across the street.. Not wanting to kill someones pet, I hit my brakes at the last moment to avoid doing that... Didn't you see the Dog?

I thought he was going to have a heart attack. But one of his fellow officers sort of took him aside and in a bit the new officer came over to me and said for me to continue on my way....

Although the practice didn't stop, I enjoyed my 15 minutes of fame that evening.....

Sye, I honestly don't think the vast majority of those that do that don't even realize that it is coming up until it is upon them and they have to crowd in... Could be wrong, but it just seems that way...... NOW if they (like a previous thread here) are passing traffic on the berm, that is a different story...

Pet Peeves...

Having reached an age where having pet peeves are a waste of time and energy... I have only one that I can think of at this moment...

Children (and I have a couple of Grand kids that do this) who scream at approximately 8,0000,920,876.001 Db's , My poor old ears cringe, my belly jumps and I start crying when that happens......lol

I have thought of a flashing sign that could be programed (on the fly and verbally) to inform the cars behind you of your feelings.... But then somebody in a big Ford Truck would do their best to assuage their hurt feelings by causing you to wreck....

There, that'll teach em...

Alright, my pet peeves also are driving related. In Illinois you can turn right on a red light after stopping first. An exception is that in the city and outlying areas there may be a no turn on red sign. As I drive to work in the early morning hours when there is basically no traffic out, there are 2 cars on a 4 lane hwy heading in the same direction. Now I am coming up to a stoplight and turn my blinker on to notify the person in front of me( most people always checking rear view mirror) that I'm turning right. If there should happen to be another vehicle in the left lane or not, they stay in the right lane all the way to the light. So here I am waiting on the red light sitting behind an idiot that HAS to be the first car in line at the light. ARRGG!! Don't even get me started about not acknowledging with a simple wave when I let your dumb azz in after cutting in line at one of the construction merges. Thanks for letting me rant and oh, good morning.

In England, don't the little old ladies have to empty their cart anyways in order for the clerk to ring up their items? They could be putting their purse in the bottom to prevent it from getting stolen.
