I am new to the hog and have been reading and watching the last couple of weeks. I noticed for the most part everyone is very helpful. I would like some help if possible. My wife and I and another couple are going to Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine in a couple of weeks. We are from Texas and have never been to the northeast U.S. We would appreciate any advice that we could get. We are avid photographers (not pros) but love travel photography so it is our primary interest in going to New England.

Your timing is very good. You're coming around the time when the foliage changes. The temperature should be nice with a touch of fall crispness in the air. Vermont is full of quaint little villages like Woodstock that are a photographers dream. The entire state is primarily beautiful little towns so just pull off the main road whenever you see a church steeple.

New Hampshire has the majesty of the mountains as well as some nice little coastal towns. If the foliage is breaking, I think you'll get the best shots in the mountain areas. Maine is still my favorite for taking pictures. If you follow the coastline, you will discover rugged coastline shots as well as quaint little villages like Ogunquit and Kennebunkport. You're going to have a great time.

You will have a blast! Foliage peak is unpredictable but don't let that worry you. If it looks like it hasn't "turned" yet, drive north and/or to higher elevations. If it looks like it has passed peak, drive south. In Maine, Acadia National Park has lovely foliage. Catch a lighthouse or two while you're on your way to or from NH.

In New Hampshire and Vermont, there just isn't anything that isn't pretty. The mountains in the north turn earlier and are really beautiful without anything but leaves and mountains to work with. In the little towns, look for old white-painted churches, stately town halls, old mills, quaint libraries to set off the foliage. In the countryside look for barns, silos, and covered bridges - they look wonderful with foliage dappled around. Visit an apple farm or two to get shots of trees, applepicking, pumpkins, farm animals, etc. There are wonderful waterfalls in Vermont and beautiful lakes in NH to reflect and contrast with the leaves. The Connecticut Byway which runs along the Vt-NH border along the Connecticut river is a nice scenic road.

Maybe I'll see you there, headed that way in a couple of weeks for my annual "foliage fix".

If you're interested in history, spend a little time in Boston too: Old North Church and other spots.

Southern Maine doesn't represent the "true" Maine coast, so hopefully you will have time to get to Acadia National Park as suggested. Pink granite, rocky and wild!

Looking forward to seeing an "outsider's" perspective of New England!

New Hampster: get there from driving from Portland through Fryeberg - very scenic, then drive the Kancamangus Highway loop. That is where most of the best viewing is. Get a guidebook that will tell you where the wooden bridges and waterfalls are. If you have a nice day either drive the Mt. Washington Rd (if you are a braver man than I!) or take the cog railroad. Portland Maine - you can take the ferry from the Old Port area out to Peaks Island for a few hours - very nice, but you also have to drive over to South Portland to visit the iconic Portland Head Light, commissioned by President George Washington! I think it is against the law to return from Maine without 1) eating Lobster, and 2) taking a photo of the Portland Head Light! Then - driving up Rt. 1 will put you through lots of interesting little Maine towns, but don't dawdle too much, because your goal should be Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park, one of the most spectacular spots in the country! You will have a blast!

Franconia Notch in New Hampshire where the Old Man in the Moutin resides. Hope I'm right here, it's been a few years. They have a cable car that goes all the way to the top of the mountain. What a view. They also have a museum there with the old cable cars from the fifties when I rode them as a kid. Gee, that makes a guy feel, old! With the trees turning, it'll be beautiful. There is a real nice lake , I believe at the bottom. Water as clear as crystal and cold enough to make you come shooting up out of it like a Poseidon submarine missile! Maybe someone here could help out with the road number. Can't remember that. But you won't be sorry when you see it.

Ahoy RonM13,

My wife and I moved from New Mexico to New Hampshire three years ago, and have not tired of the beauty that abounds here and throughout New England. The closest parralel to New Hampshire that I've witnessed is Ireland, with it's special brand of green.

All the advice given so far is right on target, and I'd make bold to say, relax and enjoy. The beauty of New England will embrace you. and you'll find a photo worthy scene at every turn.

I truly loved life in the South West and believe the beauty found there is a treasure, but in New Hampshire I need only step out on my back porch to view a gurgling brooke surrounded by trees and assorted creatures.

Accordingly, be prepared for New England to embrace you and provide stunning contrast to the beauty you find in your native Texas.

Gute Reise, Buon viago, Vaya con Dios,

Martin

Think you will find that the "old man" fell off the mountain a few years back.

I thought I read several years ago that the Old Man of the Mountain finally collapsed after so many years of literally being held up by wire and other attempts to keep it together. It isn't there anymore.

Unfortunate but it was an amazing rock outcropping that looked like an old man with a hooked nose. Hence, it's name

There is a Facebook Group called The Photography Guild Of Cape Cod that could be a good source of information. A member, Arnold John Kaplan, Has a very inexpesive guide to the most scenic places to photograph the Cape complete with GPS co-ordinates. I know that if you contact him, you'd be all set.
