This is hand held at about 90 yards Waited an hour for him to take flight, but not to happen. Second shot a lil out of focus on the head but can see lunch sticking out of his beak. Found lots of food there. Only cropped no PP. CC always welcome.

You have good subjects, but you have to perfect your stalking abilities to enable you to get closer. The images will be much better because you will have more detail recorded.

A long lens provides great opportunities. But it is not a substitute for getting in closer. And put that thing on a tripod. :thumbup:

Only possible to get closer would be in a BOAT.

Sounds like a great project. Just finished adapting mine recently. Do a search for the images I posted. I don't think that Great Blue Heron is the only Heron in New Jersey. Find spots that give you better opportunities. That heron has to travel just like all of the other wildlife. Don't short yourself by convincing yourself that you can't get a better shot. Keep on trying. You are off to a good start.
