All I know is that it's a salamander. But what species?
I goggled it to try to find out more about this lil' bugger but couldn't find anything that resembled it. If this mud puppy came from one of the ponds, he sure had one heck of a hike! (And I didn't invite him in.)
Sal Mander
But...but...but...this is a NEBRASKA salamander!!!

LOL, well I'm also the one who initially thought it was a gecko...
Try Googling "Nebraska Salamander species finder"
http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Ambystoma/A_tigrinum.shtmlEastern tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum)
The eastern tiger salamander is typified by yellow to olive spots or blotches on a brown to black background. The spotting can be highly variable depending on the population. Eastern tigers range from New York south along the eastern coat to Florida and west to Nebraska, Kansas, and Eastern Texas. They are absent from the Appalachian highlands.

YAY! Thanks N-man. If anyone was going to come up with an answer...well, you know. Thanks.
~ BTW...Admin sent me a PM and told me not to use CAPS in my topic line. Well DANG! It was intentional...I was YELLING!!! <Laf'n> ~
I was reading the link you attached...they are endangered? Really? Sheesh! I wish now that I would have taken more photos. And, I didn't realize how big they could get...up to 13"!!! Holy moly, if he had showed up at my door and had been THAT big, I think I would have had serious laundry problem!!!
Thanks for the science lesson. Just goes to show...an ol' dawg CAN learn new tricks!!!
Happy trails~
It's either a salamander or a saleperson from Geico insurance!
Hope you let him/her go in the same bayou!
You mentioned mud puppy, or water dog which is a member of the Hellbender family. Here in North Carolina they can reach lengths to 3', and they live entirely in water. I've had a 2 footer brush up against my leg when trout fishing, and have seen strings of their eggs on stream bottoms. Scared me to death. Hellbenders are the world's largest Salamander and can grow to 6' in Japan. I'd love to get a shot of one of those!
That Tiger Salamander you photographed is a pleasant fellow in comparison.
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. slimy looking critter
Slimy is beautiful to those who live in the bog. I live in south Louisiana.
stay far far away from that thing!! I recognize it immediately has one of god's most feared creatures. I believe it is an... Insurance salesman.
Oh...the slimy tailed lawyer!
