There was a town prior to 10 years ago in an area on the I-25.
Supposedly only 2 people lived there and they had a PO. To get on the map you needed a PO.
I imagined that Geronimo actually named this little place.
He pointed to the south and told his braves to go in that direction. He had pointed to the north and decided to go UPHAM.
Here we are in 2013 and they built a spaceport VIRGIN Galactic to send people in space and return safely. They tested the craft in the CA desert.
I visited NM many years ago and found this dirt road off the
I-25 and I contacted a friend who states that the road is still dirt. A road from T or C, NM is paved to spaceport.
UPHAM to outer space.

You might try a cup of coffee in the morning before you post, then maybe we can understand what you are talking about ----- Just saying
It took me a while and I had to read this quite a few times. This is what I got.
1. Ten years ago there was a small town off of I-25 with a post office that only two people living in it and that you need a Post office to get your town name on the map.
2. Then Geronimo named a town Upham.
3. Somebody built a spaceport and tested it someplace in California.
4. PinOakEO visited new Mexico years ago and found a dirt road off of I-25
5. PinOakEO contacted a friend and found out the road is still dirt.
6. A road from T or C New Mexico is paved to the spaceport somewhere in California.
I think I got it all.
What all this means? I have no idea! :?

(Rod Sterling's Night Gallery music in the background) wow !
DaDa DaDa DaDa DaDa!
Geronimo wanted to go north, therefore, UPHAM, on I-25.
I figured this is how the area got its name.

Upham, ASLC's premiere DSO Site
What we affectionately call 'Upham' is a cleared patch of desert about 35 miles north of Las Cruces. It is our primary dark sky observing site. Directions: From Las Cruces, drive north on I-25. The mile markers count up as you head north; the Upham exit is just past mile marker 32 north of town (You'll probably pass a Border Patrol checkpoint about five miles before the Upham off-ramp). At the bottom of the ramp, turn right. You'll immediately cross a cattle crossing. Proceed north on a usually good dirt road (if there has no appreciable recent rain). At 1 mile the main road veers off to the right. Somewhere around 3 miles you pass by a ranch and a big tower. At the 5.4 mile turnoff there is a small building with a phone wire attached. Turn right. Drive about 0.6 miles and look for a clearing on the right.
Observers typically arrive at Upham to set up a bit before sundown, and often remain well past midnight. Occasionally, people gather at the NE corner of the Lowes Home Improvement Center parking lot (on Main, just West of I-25) and drive to Upham together. The caravan leaves for Upham about an hour before sundown. If you're new to the area and wish to join this caravan, it's a good idea to contact the members using the aslcnm (Yahoo) listserver. Instructions for joining the listserver can be found

Virgin Galactic is the name of the office building in Las Cruces.
I mistakenly called the spaceport out in the desert VG.
But UPHAM does exist and I claimed it was named by Geronimo.
I claim that was his way of stating he was going north.
Like in "me go upham".

Billionaire Branson is the owner of Virgin Air, plus other assorted
biz, like Virgin Mobile (cell phone service), and others. :-o
Heard that a 100,000 ft in the air, BALLOON trip is scheduled from this spaceport for only $75,000 for about 2 hr trip.
19 miles up, up and away. This is not a Branson venture.
But they will use "rented" space, along with other biz.
But the dirt road from Las Cruces has not been touched, according to my friend in NM.
