Your # 2 photo is indeed a "God's Painting."
Army Airmail pilots during the 1920's greatly feared coming upon a blanket of heavy overcast between them and the ground, especially if low on fuel.
Without radar and few if any airfields with guidance systems, a pilot would often need to chance a blind descent down through the cloud cover in search of an airfield or desperate for any old farmer's field where he might safely set his aircraft down.
To often the sightless pilot would instead fly straight into a hill or low mountain.
That ragged but beautiful rift in your second picture is similar to others way back then that made true believers out some very lucky pilots.
