Nikon M2 extender for 55mm F/3.5 + D600 - Will it work?

I know there is dicussion about Pre-AI lenses not being compatible with newer digital bodies. As I understand there is a special flange and bevel that prevents you from dismounting the lens.

I have a question. Below is the rear end of the 55mm F/3.5 Macro lens, and the M42 extender.

It looks like the lens is unmodified (therefore ummountable on my D600) but that the extension ring is a little bit different.

Can anyone give me insight on whether or not it's safe to mount one, none or both of these on my D600?

Thanks!!

I purchased a Nikkor Micro 55-mm f/3.5 (pre-Ai) with M2 extension tube in 1972, and still use it manually on my D90 for table-top macro-photography. Read more here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/55f35ai.htm

Unfortunately neither one of those will fit the D600. You need to get the aperture ring modified (a simple job). The same goes for the old M2, it needs to be modded.

Well the lens will go onto the extender without trouble. Just don't try to put it on the body.

Are you basing this statement on personal experience? I have no problem mounting the M2 ring &/or my 40+ year old 55-mm macro lens.

The extender was mounted onto the body perfectly with no issue. The lens was mounted onto the extender.

I did not mount the lens onto the body without the extender.

The OP has a D600. That has an aperture 'finger' on the body.
A non AI lens will jam this finger or break it.

The M2 doesn't have this, the finger moves back and forth like any AI lens..
