Do you have just the lights or the R1C1 kit consisting of mounting ring, SU800 commander, etc?

Does the D700 have a pop-up flash? If so, you can go into the custom flash settings menu and set it for "commander' mode". Make sure the "channel" & "group" settings are set to the same settings on camera AND flash units. If the D700 does not have a pop-up flash, you will need to use a hot shoe mounted flash unit that has a "commander" mode or use the SU-800 wireless speedlight commander.

I never knew of anyone actually using them for dentistry.
It looks like the flash heads are too far away from the lens axis to get to the back w/o shadows from the lips unless you are using the SW-11 close-up adapters shown below. http://www.adorama.com/NKSW11.html?gclid=CK3OzOHnm7kCFfBcMgods2oA3w.
I've had Nikon users ask me about a ringlight for their cameras and the SR-200 system looks too bulky and the odd-sized batteries are not always easy to get. The Metz 15 MS-1 works great for them, but again, you need to control it with the pop-up flash on your D700 in commander mode an on-board commander unit. (It's not a ring-light either but the flashes are positioned closer.
I echo naturepics43's suggestion.
I use Nikon's CLS system wirelessly and it works great.
Get the SG 31R IR panel to keep the pop-up flash from showing in the photo. http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Product/Flash-Couplers/4905/SG-31R-IR-Panel-for-Built-In-Flash.html

Please me know how it works for you.

With the Nikon system, i usually have to boost the output by 2/3 of a stop to get the right exposure. Easy thing to do in the commander set-up. I think you are right on my way to work. I'll stop by for a cleaning in the next few days! ;-)
