I've never gotten that message, but when I load my card into the computer the 1st thing I do open the card and rename the photos so they won't have those numbers that are automatically assigned to the card. Then open lightroom and click "Import Photos and Video" and it loads from the card with the new names. I'm guessing you already have photos by the name or numbers it's trying to open.

Double check your setup. While importing images there are many choices that LR lets you make. One of them is to rename them. If you aren't using a proper name or the naming convention properly, this this is what will happen. If you have it set to rename the images upon import, change the setting to not rename them and see if they import. If that works then you need to see if there was something in the way you named them that fouled things up.

I am working on a Mac, and very new to it, so not sure if I know how to rename the images on the camera. Besides, I was just naming them "Julia" which has worked on previous imports. I did have it set to rename on import. Question, does it matter that I took the photos in L + Raw? This is the first time I have tried to load raw on the Mac.

When i import photo into lightroom I always rename, but I use name ,place, date and number so each photo is distinct. Try importing using a different program then importing to lightroom.

Mac or PC doesn't matter - Lightroom controls the import.

I am assuming that you're putting a sequence number after Julia (if not, do so) also look at your previously named Julia files and see what sequence number you left off on - then begin your sequence numbering on your new files by incrementing the number.

Perhaps, the previous files being renamed were sent to folders with differing names (date taken, location, etc.) but this time it was set to reuse an existing folder.

I'm no techie, and at 87 years old (October), don't think there is enough time for me to become one. Shucks, when I was a kid, our "cell" phones consisted of two tomato cans with a string running between them. We could actually send and receive voice messages, the speaker and listener were usually no more that 20 feet apart!
Ok, the question was about importing into Lightroom. I have LR 5, and use windows 7. I go to my pictures in Windows, choose "Lightroom photos" (that's how I have mine set up), and open that folder. In that folder I have files in folders by the year taken. This being 2013, I open that, then click on folder 2013 and create a new folder. I name it 2013-August 15- Little Susie at zoo, or whatever the event is. Now open LR, click import, choose from where, and any other info you wish on right side panel. Scroll down in right side options, your 'My Pictures", along with whatever else will in bottom part of right side. Go to your Lightroom photos, open, go to 2013 folder, open. Now in the subfolders your 2013 little Susie folder will be showing. Click on it to highlight it, hit import at bottom and sit back and watch it import all that is on your card. If you use a more detailed labeling system, it can still be changed.
