Moon, I never would have believed it.
I just took this a few minutes ago, *hand held* w/ my sx30. I never would have believed I could have done such a super shot without a telescope!
Not a stock photo!
Oh by the way it was 850mm equivalent, 1/250th sec, f/5.8, & Iso of 80. And hand held! It knocked my socks off! (not that I was wearing any LOL)
Save your good moon shots. You can add them to other pictures for great composits.

I like seeing the craters!!!
I really like this. I have taken a number of moon shots with my SX40 but have never been happy with anything handheld. I echo the advice of saving your moon shots to add to other photos. Some have asked if I "really" took this photo. The answer is yes. The building and moon were shot on the same night, but I needed a little PSE help to position the moon where I wanted it. I have not yet felt the need to add the above explanation, simply giving "yes" as my truthful answer.
DJ, I like your composition too. Great balance. The moon has got to be bigger than life. Your color is right.
Aw, shucks. You're making me blush.

Did you go to manual mode? In program or auto mode the camera keeps trying to meter on the whole sky, thus forcing the speed way down. The moon is bright enough (It's day time up there) that you can use settings you would use in the daytime i.e. ISO 80, 1/200sec, f/5.7 etc.
Both Meives and djmills images are edited but the moon in djmills to me is jarring; it looks wrong and out of place. The reason for that is when one sees the full moon the sun if visible or the light from the sun is behind the observer not in front. So even to people who don't edit pictures it looks edited. That's ok if that's what you want, and I've seen plenty of good art deliberately done this way, but it's something to be aware of if it isn't what you want. If the moon were at a crescent or even first quarter it would fit.
