Took these at my favorite lake. First 4 are at 123 yards at 500mm on tripod. Last 2 are at 30 feet hand held. The rascal flew toward me and landed 30 feet away. I was so excited I was shaking. LOL. Don't even know what settings were. Guess I could check PIE. Thanks for looking.

Most of the picture have a blue overcast on the bird and with no definition. A lighting problem which could have been corrected.

Looks like your having fun with that new lens. I've had mine for about a year now and one thing that I have discovered thru trial & error (lots of errors) is to use a shutter speed as high as possible. I very rarely go below 1/640 at the long end. I also always leave the OS on unless doing BIF. Have fun & keep posting.

Try under exposing 1 or more stops (faster shutter speed) when shooting white birds. It has worked well for me. Just keep experimenting.

PS: Sorry I just re-read your original post and noticed you did not ask for C&C. Don't know how to delete my post so I hope I didn't offend you.

PS: Sorry I just re-read your I used spot focus on the egret and was suprised that it did not was out to bad. Sometimes when doing wildlife things happen so fast that you don't have time to make all the adjustmenst that you would like to. I keep it on focus priority so the suttter will not release it is focused. That has helped a lot. That lens is a bear to hand hold when fully extended.

I have that lens as well (Nikon D7000) and find that it is best used on a tripod, slower focusing than I'd like when using it near 500mm. Your last shot really nailed it, but the first 3 at football field plus are pretty darn good.
