Am planning trip and not sure what wide zoom range will work best. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I have 17-35 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 28-300 5.6 plus my toy fisheye. From all I have read and seen, I don't think I need the heavy but quick 24-70. If I am wrong please enlighten me and I thank you.

Just got back from Oahu, Take the 17-35 and the 28-300.
I took a 16-50mm 2.8, The 50mm 1.4 for the luau. Took my 70-300, but didn't use much. mostly I used a sigma 18-250mm as a walk around.
Enjoy there is so much to see

For me, 17-35 and the 28-300.

Throwing this in....I would advise a shoulder bag that will allow you to change lens quickly without assistance from anyone. The camera bag should allow you to store the camera with either lens attacked, extra lens, external flash, memory cards, spare batteries, etc.
Post images when you return!!!!!

Jay Pat is right in taking a shoulder bag. Also watch out when and where you change lens. I changed a lens near a waterfall and didn't notice the spots on the sensor till 2 days later.
The grandchildren really don't care
The pictures were just for me and family so I'll keep them any way

Gene - thank you. Just before another recent trip, I found the 28-300 used. It took the place of my 80-200 when I travel by plane. Since you saved me some weight, I might add the 85 1.4 for the luau and wedding functions we will attend.

It looks like everyone agrees with those two lens choices. I use a back pack which I like for the airport hikes, but is slow for lens changes. I found my old vest which is what I was going to use while there. Today I bought extra pouches to attach to my belt for memory cards and batteries.
Also appreciate your sensor spot comment. Has happened to me before.

I always travel with my 24-1200. not too heavy, and covers most things that I want to photograph.

That f/1.4 will be perfect for the dim lighting during entertainment.

If you've never been to Oahu, one of the most visited tourist attractions is the Polynesian Cultural Center. I've never been there, but I've heard good things about it.

Thanks for link Jerry. All of our friends that have visited Oahu have all said we have to see it. Our friends, whose daughter is getting married there, want to visit with us after wedding activities are over.

Richard - not much choice here. We are going to attend a wedding. From reading a tour guide, it looks like most of the activities we want are free, but there is also a paid tour for the same activity!

Gene

Did you go to Pearl Harbor? My wife just read last night " only average size cameras allowed, and no camera bags". What was your experience or any other UHH slinging your average cameras around?

Mel, when I got my 28-300, I thought this would be my perfect travel lens and would cover MOST things allowing me to travel lighter. That same affliction that caused the original purpose keeps popping up saying there MIGHT be something requiring that other lens.

No camera bags on pearl harbor tour, sorry but your wife can't take her pocketbook either. I took my sony A77 with sigma 18-250 with no problem, but then I'm retired(disabled) marine. you will want your widest angle lens to view all the names on the back wall.
don't forget to check out the trees, near the beaches
