Nice shot, I like the composition. Robber flies around these parts are usually larger. Typically in the range of 20mm or so.

These guys look to be in the Efferia family. They get up to 19mm in size. Common in some of the areas I shoot. At 1:1 they would not fit in your view finder.

I sent this photo to Bug Guide and this is what they have:
Superfamily Asiloidea
Family Asilidae (Robber Flies)
Subfamily Asilinae
Genus Promachus (Giant Robber Flies)
Species hinei (Promachus hinei)
These were not very big, only about an inch long. I have seen them larger.

I thought they were Efferia aestuans.. I notice now the legs are red of the ones you photographed. Robbers are one of my favorite subjects to photograph. Hope you find more.
