I think this is a juvenile Cooper's Hawk, but not absolutely sure.
I opened the back door today, which I usually don't do because of the humidity.
Happened to look out and saw this bird sitting on top of the chain link fence.
Quite a surprise and my camera was within my reach.
Hope you enjoy.
Straight from the camera, except the last one has been cropped.
You did really well with this set Doris. Good shooting. I'm going to take a stab at this and say it's a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Definitely a juvenile. I'm basing that on the how thin the legs are and am estimating size by the top rail on the fence. The eyes on this one will soon be bright red though they're still a yellow orange color for now. Nice stuff lady.

Thanks so much Joe, appreciate your response.
I knew it was a young one, because I've seen the adult ones and this one was definitely smaller.
Thanks for the info, appreciated.
:-)
Nice set. Fortunate (or good planning on your part) to have your camera handy. Well done.

Thank you ebrunner and appreciate you stopping to respond.
I usually keep the camera near the back door when I'm home, so the fortunate part was having the back door open to see him.
The birds will fly away as soon as I open the back door.
:-)
Great shots! Just love the feather patterns looks like they have been painted on.
What a delightful find in your backyard! Love #1 with the tilted head and inquisitive expression :)

I'm going with a Cooper's Hawk. Both Cooper's Hawk & Sharpie's are similar. Sharpie has a square-tipped tail and the Cooper has a rounded tip tail. Cooper's Hawk in your area all year, Sharpie in the winter. Hope that helped.
Both also have reddish eyes when they are adults.
