Actually, Autofocus is designed to determine the focus-point based on what is brightest in the frame, which in this case is the house.. and it's in really sharp focus, so the auto is doing it's job. This has been a big point of discussion among dark-skined people who say that camera makers are racist because they don't focus on their dark skin. (Which is not my opinion, just some discussions I've come across)
She needs to use the camera's spot-focus instead of the auto-focus to avoid this issue in the future.

THIS is the issue at hand.

You have focused on the house, and not your daughter.

Period.

Not panning, not slow shutter speed, not anything else. Only that you missed focus.

As was said...don't use multi-point and allow the camera to figure out which point to use...that's a recipe for disaster.

Either use the center single-point and practice putting it on a target fast, or use one of the other single points and do the same.

that's just basically it...nothing more, nothing less.

And I guess by now you've realized that no amount of post processing will actually make something in focus when it wasn't in the first place; you can "fake" some sharpness into it but that's about it.

Not at all...I know she screwed it up...I read through a few pages of comments, some telling her to learn to pan...some telling her to raise her shutter speed.

I responded like everyone else with what I thought was the correct answer... I even gave her some suggestions to improve her situation in the future

Why do you feel the need to chastise me?

Are you having a bad day?

If I used derogatory language and called her some kind of a name please, by all means let me know...but I don't see that I did, I saw myself responding to a few incorrect observations and giving her some tips on how to improve AF performance...so your coming here to be the Self-appointed-forum-sheriff perplexes me to say the least.

I am easy-going...I'm just perplexed as to why you think that direct, to-the-point comments and suggestions on improving count as ripping someone up and being rude and nasty that's all.

If telling her the reason for the AF mess up and giving her specific suggestions on what she can do to improve ISN'T help....then what is?

Is spending time being the self-appointed-behavior-sheriff helping her through her AF problem?

Of course not.
