If you use auto mode it may compensate for changes in light but I use manual mode with auto ISO if I think the lighting might be changing.
While shooting in M you have to set the shutter speed to the proper setting for video. Typically if you are shooting at 30fps movies you will use a shutter speed approximately double the fps or 1/60th. If shooting a more jumpy movie like they do now days at 25fps then you'd set your shutter at 1/50th. If shooting slow motion at 60fps you'd use 1/125th shutter. Once you have determined the fps and shutter speed relating to that you choose the f/stop you like for the effect you want. Opened up for less DOF and stopped down for more DOF. After you have set both shutter speed and f/stop all you have left to do is determine the ISO. You can do this by putting your camera in LiveView and displaying the histogram for a reflected light reading of your scene and adjust your ISO accordingly. If you have some clouds moving in and out of your scene or something else that is causing the light to keep changing, you can put the camera in auto ISO. You can also set your camera for the minimum and maximum ISO range so that your camera won't exceed those settings.
Jeep Daddy, you nailed it with just what info that I needed to take care of my settings for video on a canon t4i. I used the manual setting and it works like a charm. Thank you so much, my mind is relived as a am going to Alaska next week and was somewhat desperate to have the right settings. I am just a guy that likes to take photos and turn them into video slideshows for family and friends. Thanks again, I really love this forum website.
