For that distance, the first one is pretty sharp; second one , not so much. JMHO

Dude, just because you have a 500mm lens now doesn't mean that you can shoot anything that is a mile away. Lenses have limitations. You still have to get close enough to shoot your subject to retain detail that is important in a great shot. Shooting wildlife photography takes patients. You must wait for an opportunity that puts the animal close enough to get that great shot. Or you must develop skills that allow you to get close to the subjects. Getting close isn't all you have to worry about. Being in the right spot for the best light is all important too. Taking just portraits of animals will be boring after you get a few great portraits. Soon you will be looking for more action shots of the bird/animal eating, mating/rituals, nesting feeding their young, going for the kill, flight shots and more. Look at the other images posted here and other places and pay close attention to what really is a great shot and strive to achieve this with your newly acquired lens.

I must say that I find your comments less than gracious and a bit condescending...the author of the thread is simply commenting on the reach he has with his new lens, nothing more...btw, how many "patients" does shooting wildlife take, a hospital full?

Just one mans opinion. Why don't you keep it to yourself since I didn't ask for one. Dude, this isn't a spelling bee, it's a photography forum.

I'm just being honest with the OP. He was shooting a subject that is double the limit of that lens but he doesn't know it. Now he does.

It's okay when you are in kindergarten to be told your art is great but this is a grown up forum. When the work isn't great, a person shouldn't be told that it is. Yeah, sometimes I can be a bit forward but that's how I roll.

Yes and my reaction to your post is but one man's opinion as well!

"I'm just being honest with the OP. He was shooting a subject that is double the limit of that lens but he doesn't know it. Now he does."

What makes you presume the OP does not know the limit of his lens....perhaps simply an instructive post, not meant to be anything else!

Again...perhaps the OP was simply demonstrating the reach at 60 yards...I did not notice any comment from the OP regarding the "greatness" of the work...some responders seemed to enjoy the shots, however...sorry you did not...but hey that's how you "roll"...

For the rec. I have been doing photography for a long time from 127 film on up, and know about composition and making pictures and not taking pictures. Was just impressed with the lens, was more than I expected. When photography stops being fun for me, then is time to quit. OMO
