Actually, in 1912, less than 30% of the population of Kentucky reached the 8th grade. Even fewer made it to high school. This is more a reflection of economics than the state of education.

It appears to me that you missed the main point.

There are people today, graduating from high school who have elementary school level reading abilities, let alone the knowledge required of these eighth graders.

It appears to me that if you were around in the '50s and you look around you today, you wouldn't need anyone to point out to you how dummed down the society became. But you also would have to admit that the kids then didn't have the kind of distraction the kids of today have.
