I just did my first run through of this week's challenge, narrowed it down to about 50... Going back to look again. There are some wonderful, beautiful, creative, imaginative, striking works of art. Don't deny yourself this stroll through our gallery and your opportunity to make a difference in this forum. You will encourage and inspire the artists that you vote for. Don't forget to PM them after the results to let them know why you voted or even just liked their photograph. Thanks all and have a super photographic week! Get out there and shoot!

My first pass resulted in 40 selections. I have since narrowed that down to 4. I really hated making some of the deletions I did as I felt they were really good and interesting photos. But, in the end, I had to use my own interpretation of "negative space" as a guideline. I have another day to hopefully determine just what is the most widely accepted definition and perhaps change my selections. But, as Steve warned us at the outset, it is very subjective. And in the end, as regards my 1 point, I guess the entrants will just have to accept my subjective opinion.

Several selections made. Narrowing it down is quite easy when taking the exif data into account. Most of the entries where made months or years before the challenge was issued. I weed out the old or undated images and vote for what I have left. The date is after all, is a part of the challenge.

It seems to me that to truly participate in the challenges the photos should be made after the challenge is issued. I think a lot of folks just rummage through their archives and select something they think might fit. Bad faith.

Click the "download original file" link.

Once you've downloaded the photo you will need software that can show you all the information that the has camera attached to it. On the Mac I open with Preview and then use the Inspector found in the Tools menu.

If you are using Windows, you may find the info here under "how to find it" to be useful:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/exif-photo-data-find-understand/

Lightroom or Aperture will also display all the camera information related to a particular photo. You can easily delete the photos once you are done with examining the exif data.

I would much rather vote for one taken last year that I think is negative space, than one done this week that I cannot see as a negative space photo.
Feel free to explain to me how your entry complies with negative space?
Because I just can't see it.

I am new here and am guilty of using an archived photo in my first submission. We all make mistakes, but it seems to me that in art we can all show off what we did in the past, but as the expression goes "what have you done lately?".

I feel that these photo challenges are generously offered each week as a means of stimulating creativity and pushing oneself artistically to respond in the moment, and that using an archived photo can be perceived as disrespecting the spirit of the challenge.

As for my work "Refrigerator Magnets: negative space study"; I will explain how it complies:

Negative space by implication denotes positive space, which in fine art we call a figure/ground relationship.

Each magnet has its own figure/ground relationship embedded within it. As an example, the red 2 or 3 is the figure on a white ground. It is obvious which is the positive and which is the negative space. These various elements of positive/negative space where further arranged on the white ground of the refrigerator and submitted with a cherry on top just to prove what a clever boy I am.

The composition itself combines positive elements in an artistic arrangement in negative space. The refrigerator can be understood as the blank canvas and the magnetic elements as the figures (positive) on this ground (negative).
