Before starting college in Portland, OR, we camped on the far side of Spirit Lake, way back in 1960 and again in 1961. Total beauty, and Mt. St. Helens was an almost perfect volcanic cone.

Hiking in the high country above Spirit Lake, there were many large pumice fields and many areas with young conifers, so we knew that the volcano, while inactive, was not extinct.

If I can drag my wife that far from San Diego, it would be fascinating to see how much the land has healed.

It has recovered some, but still has a long way to go. These are not the best pictures, but might give you some idea.

Thanks, David. Would be great to be around to see the total "healing" of that beautiful place.

Thank you for posting these. In 1960, the whole area around Spirit Lake was heavily forested with conifers. The lake was clear and full of big rainbow trout.

The high country was less forested. I caught a 15" brook trout in one of the high lakes. It hit a wobbler in spite of having the tail of a half digested 7" trout sticking out of its mouth. Its flesh was pink as a salmon's and delicious. I guess all were wiped out in the eruption. but nature comes back unless its paved or poisoned.

It's weird. I was an avid fisherman until my 50s. Now, I can't kill a fish. I eat them, but can't kill them or get any pleasure from fighting and landing them. I think a lot of us change that way as we age.

Beautiful images, Bee. The slight cloud cover adds to the appeal of the mountain shot.
