Raising a Caterpillar into a Butterfly

I found this (I think) Black Swallowtail caterpiller on parsley. I have a good size butterfly house. Put a bunch of parsley in a small container of water, a couple of sticks propped up and put the caterpiller in it. Will this work? Also, I am leaving for vacation for a week on Friday. I have the house sitting on my screened porch. There is plenty of parsley and it should stay fresh in the water for a week.

It should work. You might want to make sure that the water is covered with tin foil and the parsley poked through it to the water so your caterpillar doesn't drown himself.

Oh, never thought of that. I'll do it. Thank you.

Cool work CCG... Wish I lived by you; I'd offer to house-sit your cat!

Thanks, Susan. I do have 2 cats also. I am going to ask the cat sitter to refill the water container in the butterfly house too. I'm sure she'll roll her eyes. I will take pictures along the way.

Maybe she could put in fresh parsley while she is filling the water if it hasn't pupated before then.

Hundreds of comedians out of work, and we have a photographer who thinks she is funny!

ok jrb "Bazinga".

Now, back to the important stuff, after all this is CCG's post.

I'm so glad to see you have the 2 cats now. This should be a really good experience for us to follow. I've seen butterfly houses for sale but didn't realize they were actually used. I always learn so much here. Can you take a picture of the house too, when the butterfly's come out? Will add perspective to your post. :)

Will do. I actually bought the butterfly house for the grandchildren, but decided to keep it myself. Bad Grandma.
