The D version is much less expensive than the G version because it does not have the motor within the lens. You might also want to save some more moolah by going with the f1.8. The 50mm D f1.8 is considered one of Nikon's best lenses. The f1.4 only gives you one stop. With film cameras, it may have been definitely worth it, but with the D7100 and it's ability to shoot at high ISO, you can make up that one stop easily. Save the money and get the f1.8. I have the 1.8 and am amazed at how "bright" the photos are when taken in a dark room.
