I just watched a video interview that Fro Knows Photo did with a young guy who started a site to help get camera gear returned if it is lost or stolen. It's free, so take a look at lenstag.com and see if it might be something you could use. Under Settings, there is an option to make everything you enter private - a good idea.

I was curious why my gear might become public so I took a look.

It seems you can send a list of your gear to others via a LensTag.com/URL. My guess is to friends, family and your insurance adjuster as a backup.

Love the service and glad you brought it up again. Thanks.

Jerry, thanks for sharing this great idea. I'm going to sign up and register my gear right now.

Jerryc41, I respect your inputs. Are you using it?

I entered some cameras and lenses, but I haven't yet entered any validation. That would be a picture of the s/n on the item, or a receipt. Taking a picture seems to be the more common method.

This sounds good in theory, but it will have to be extremely popular and universal if it's going to get people's equipment returned.

AND what if the thief sells it to a pawn shop? Will pawn shops take a look at that site?

It seems to me that this site is best if universally used?

Right! It will post the description and S/N of stolen items, but people have to look at the site and - then what? Will they discover that a used camera they just bought has been stolen? And will they give it back to the owner?

Theoretically, this is a great idea, but I don't seeing it being the solution to stolen equipment.
