Hello everyone, I'm new to the site. I use a Canon G12 and I neeed a little advice. I love it's SLR-like controls. I'm having trouble finding a wide angle lens that doesn't have vignetting. I just purchased a Bower VLB558 that was suppose to work perfect....to my demise with no refund availabality........ I used a Lensmate Part 1 adapter tube which helped but no cigar. Does anyone have any suggestions. I use te camera for close up automobile shots.

I have a G12, and my next question is why! did you not use Canon's adapter. I have the Canon filter adapter for mine, and I can tell you that if I use a filter + a lens hood, I get vignetting.

The only thing I have to do though, is just slightly touch the zoom, and it clears up. Like maybe; going from 28mm to 30mm. But in your case, that would be a little counter productive.

The optical angle of these Canon lenses, is 70 degrees at what you could consider the corners, or 45 degrees from the level center of the lens. So this shows you quickly that you can't have very much distance from the lens to the front edge of whatever is screwed on them, without getting vignetting.

I really don't want to commit to this, but had you used the Canon adapter, you might not have had this problem. I have seen the lensmate, and it is longer than the Cannon adapter. Adapter length + lens or filter = immediate problems.

Oh yes there is a setting in the menu that you make, for using Canons adapter tube. I don't know if this will help with the lensmate or not, but it sure can't hurt. Its supposed to make some changes, that help to limit any vignetting. Look it up in your manual its on your disk, or you can find a download for the manual on the Inet.

I really appriciate your reply. A Canon adapter came with the wide lens. For some reason, while experimenting, I was thinking that the Lensmate was actually shorter, now I see it isn't....:? Let me start all over with this thing. I haven't used the adapter option yet, I'll try that with Canon adapter. I bought the Lensmate quick change filter adapter, I love it. Thanks for the help.

I just examined everything and discovered that when I used the Bower adapter + the Canon adapter, that it is longer than the Lensmate by itself. Thats why I thought the Lensmate was shorter. Using only the Bower adapter, everythnig looks good.. .I guess I owe that young salesman an apology. and I guess you can expect stupid questions from amature dummies. I really appriciate this.

I am an amature. I use to use a Pentax K1000 about 20 years ago, and I was an amature then. Which wide angle lens do you use with your G12. This is a .5x.

I don't use anything, other than the 28mm it came with. Most of the shooting I do, the 28 is sufficient for. I do have the Canon filter adapter, and a truck load of basic and special filters though.

My last film SLR was an Olympus OM-2, great little camera. I looked into getting a DSLR this time around, but the G cameras have been calling my name for several years now, so I went that way instead. I always loved my Range-finder cameras, and that's what the G reminds me of.
Besides one of my sons owns a Nikon D300, which is a good camera, but I am not really thrilled with Nikon.

So if time doesn't catch up to me, maybe next time around a DSLR??. Probably a Canon.
