I am looking to purchase a point and shoot camera for my 86 year old parents.
I have $150 to spend, and I am so confused by reviews by people who have purchased that said camera.
Canon, Nikon and Samsung seem to be the best, maybe not. I though of also using AA or AAA batteries for operation, maybe not.
My dad uses a computer for basically emails and my mother has a ipad. I often use the program called "TeamViewer" to assist them when any problem arise. I am very computer literate, and cameras was a past time. I would like to buy it locally @ Best Buys or maybe another local store. Best Buys seems to have the largest selection.
Any help here would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you,

My wife recently bought herself two Sony cybershot P&S both off e-bay the first cost about £11 (used) and the other £60 brand new, both are comfortably in your price range and both are good cameras.

Thank you for your reply. I see that you are from the UK and it would help if you might provide the model numbers since they are different here in the USA.
Thank you

Panasonic is a great choice also. They have several nice models at or below $150.

I have to agree. Have had many Canon P&S cameras, but my last few have been Panasonic Lumix and currently have three models. Love every one of them. Great image quality and the menus are easy to use. They have quite a selection even into the $500- $6oo range, but many also in your price range which can't be beat for the price. All with Leica lenses.

Nikon just sent me this link. Looks like another option!

I would recommend getting one that has a wider angle lens.
This linked article has some info on this.

Here is one example in the price range but there are others.

Beware--Don't buy one without a viewfinder. The image in the monitor window will be completely washed out if the sunlight hits it and you won,t be able to see anything. Almost all point and shoots made today don,t have a viewfinder. One that still does is the Cannon Powershot 1400. It sells for $109.00 at Staples. It,s a very nice camera for the money.

I agree with the sentiment but there is a reasonable cost alternative to use when outside in the bright sun. I have tried other options but this is the only reasonable cost one that actually works:

I got my wife a Panasonic Lumix for $125 at WalMart last Christmas. It has an excellent Leica-labeled lens (which means it's real glass and not plastic), automatic everything, face finder to make sure faces in a group are in focus, and even a feature we don't use called "Smile Finder" which is supposed to not snap the shutter until it sees everybody or most everybody smiling. It also has a lithium-ion battery built in that you don't take out and you just plug the camera in the wall to charge it. No AAA batteries to fuss with. She uses it for everything from indoor people photos to close up product photos for eBay and other online sales, to outdoor people photos and landscape shots when we're on vacations. It always works perfectly and never under-exposes or over-exposes.

She had a Canon A2200 before that and was very unhappy with it. The auto focus was slow, it blurred easily indoors by using too low of a shutter speed, the flash worked sometimes but not always although flash was required. She was mad at it all the time because it blurred at least 4 out of 10 shots. I now carry it around in my pocket for outdoor shots at the playground with our 3 year old but I'd never recommend it, especially for elderly users. The best feature of the Canon is that the lens is very sharp.

She pleaded with me for a Panasonic after the Canon because she had two lower megapixel Panasonics before it that were also exceptional in every situation. I also have a Panasonic bridge model that is 7 years old and is awesome. I'm currently looking at a brand new Panasonic mirrorless dSLR that knocks me out. I'm completely sold on Panasonic Lumix cameras of all sizes and price ranges.

I can't say I've heard anything bad about Samsung but I just don't get into buying cameras from companies that aren't the top 4 or 5 brands. I understand that Samsung doesn't make their cameras and they're made by some other company with the Samsung tag slapped on. If you buy a Canon, Nikon, Sony, or Panasonic that's who makes it - period.

Hope any of that helps.

I am an avid fan of Olympus cameras. My current carry around is an SP 800UZ. Light weight very versatile--but it does cost $300. Process your pix with PICASA. The 800 uses a Lithium battery; it will recharge while you process your pix Alyn
