Get a 70-200 f2.8 lens your best bet

I tend to agree with you regarding the 70-200 f2.8 as long as cost, size and weight are not factors - also if one feels that f2.8 is critical as opposed to f4. You didn't mention it but IS is an important consideration. In my opinion, I still feel the f4 IS fits my needs perfectly.

I use the 24-105mm as an all around lens and find it to be excellent for portrait and scenery. With the focal range it covers you should find it to have more versatilely then the 50mm prime.

Assuming the 24-105 is a decent lens, I would recommend it over any fixed or prime lens. The zoom will allow you to do your cropping in camera, resulting in better prints than a highly cropped image from a fixed lens.

I have both of the lenses you mention, but my favourite portrait lens is my 100mm f2.8 L macro lens. I agree with the previous posters that the 50mm is too short. The 24-105 came as the "kit" lens with my 6D. Definitely a class above the usual kit lenses, but does suffer a bit with distortion and CA. I find most images need a bit of post production with this lens.

So, if you have any interest in macro, add the 100mm macro to your list to consider.

Especially if you are on full frame, I recommend 100 F2 for portraiture- much cheaper than your selections ....but not an "L"

Why not then get the 135/2.0, it is an L lens and an even better focal length for portraits on a full frame, it also does not cost more??

Because It is twice the price of the 100 - why not get the 135 soft ??

I use the 24 - 105 as my "standard" lense. It's very versitile and excellent quality.

I would think the 50mm wouldn't quite work for portraits.

I've read that 100 to 135 is "ideal".

I don't do many portraits so I don't have a lot of experience to draw from.

get both. the niffty 50 is about $100 and gives you a f1.8 lens.

Where did you read that the 24-105 is a kit lens? It is one of Canon's great L lens.

Because it has been offered in a kit ever since 2008 (with the introduction of the 5DMII). So, it is a kit lens.

I have been using the CANON 24-105mm f/4 L lens on a CANON D-60 for two years. I am totally satisfied with this lash-up and it is a good combo for all around shooting. Canon has lowered the price on this lens and I consider it a bargain for under $700. Another interesting CANON lens is the so-called "pancake" 40mm f/2.8. Can be had for about $100. A good bargain option for low-light and is non-obtrusive on a DSL camera frame.

For your information, the 24-105L is one of the best L lenses out there; it is definitely NOT a kit lens. and at a pinch could cover everything you wish to take images of.

Have you considered either the 24-70mm f/2.8 or the 70-200mm f/2.8; Canon or Sigma?

These are my two dream need to have lenses but I settle it for the 70-200mm

Also take a peek at the images taken with a 24-70mm f/2.8

I agree that it is a mighty fine lens, but that does not change the fact that it is a kit lens.
