This possum frightened the life out of me when I went into my downstairs laundry. He happily stayed there till dawn.

In the US we have opossums but most everyone shortens the name. I think they might be related but they are definitely not the same. The main difference being that if you found an opossum on your laundry it would not be so cute and nice.
