I have a Nikon D700 camera with a Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens. I've never had a problem with it for the five years I've owned it. It just bought an electronic cable release for the camera and was trying it out for the first time. I shot about 20 pictures and then I couldn't get it to snap another shot.

I removed the electronic cable release and looked over the camera. Every time I tried to take a picture manually, I noticed an r13 message every time I depressed the shutter release. It appeared in the same spot where the picture count appears. Anyone have any ideas what this is all about and what I need to do about it? Thanks for your help.

I found this online. "I'm not sure what the issue is but r13 isn't an error message as such but an indicator of shots remaining before you fill the buffer - thats why you see it on a half shutter press.

I think if it was a lens/body contact issue you'd get an f00 displayed on the body, indicating the camera is unable to communicate the lens

Sorry this isn't more help, but the only other thing I wonder is if there is a card issue - can you try a different one"

Here's another one.

Only time I have ever had this was when my 50mm's aperature wasn't set at f22. This may be your problem.

I had a problem with a r13 message on my D90 several years back. I downloaded the lastest updates from Nikon per their instuctions, and the problem was solved.

Here's a shot about "r" messages from my D600 manual.

When I get any error with my D90 I usually take out the battery wait for 10 secs and then reinsert the battery. I also take out the card and reinsert the card as well. that might work too.

That's extremely helpful, Jerry. I didn't find anything in the small manual that came with the camera and was surprised when there was nothing in the 500 page book about the Nikon 700 by David Busch I bought when I got the camera. Now I get it and can go back to taking pictures again.

Thank you, Ravynne. I gave that a try but it didn't seem to work. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

It's nice to hear you have the same camera and lens, Graham. I've seen a number of your photos on the site and admire your work. Other than a stint as a part-time wedding photographer when I first got married, the majority of my photography has been focused on shots taken of my family and on vacation.

I traded in my D80/18-200 combination for a D700/ 50mm lens when I retired five years ago. My goal is to learn how to take interesting and creative photographs. I'm using 'The Art of Photography' by Bruce Barnbaum as my initial guide and try to shoot something every day. Your pictures are some of the many great examples I've already found in this forum.

I am with you Jerry it's the buffer showing how many shots are left before the camera won't take any more

And if the aperture ring on the lens isn't set to it's maximum aperture, f16 on the lens mentioned by the OP, you get the r13 error.
