I'm heading to Alaska on Aug. 6th for a land and sea tour. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with downloading photos from their dslr to an iPad. I would like to be able to download photos while I'm there instead of waiting until I get home and sure don't want to drag my laptop along.

I was talking to a manager at an Apple store lastnight about this. He told me the iPad will not recognize RAW files. Not sure if it is true but something to research if you shoot in RAW.

Thank you. I checked with our local camera store and they only have something that works with the older iPads. Mine is a newer one so they suggested checking the Apple Store. Will do that tomorrow.

I download often to my ipad2, but not in Raw.
Perhaps the guys in the Apple store would let you try downloading to the new versions.
You might also Google up Photogene -- they have a pretty good photo editing app -- and email them with the question.
Have a real fun time up there.

Pierre

I use a non Apple branded Lightning to USB/SD/MicroSD adapter available on eBay for about $10. Apple does not yet (that I'm aware of) make one for the lightning port on my iPad mini. It is fantastic. I shoot RAW +JPEG so the machine is a little slow on figuring out what is on the card when I plug the camera into the device.

It is great for shooting somebody an E-Mail with the picture I just took. I highly recommend a similar device.

He's wrong. I have personally used my iPad for review and storage. The trick is to shoot in RAW plus jpg. You will view the raw image on the iPad but both are there. It's easy to download all files once one is home.

I use Apple's Camera Connection Kit and it works fine on my iPad3. Once I transfer, I have two copies of the images. I keep the camera and the iPad in different bags for safety. If the images are really important, I'll create a third copy in the Cloud.

Food for thought . . . .

Might be easiest/cheapest to just put 5-10 memory cards in your pocket.

What's the storage capacity of your iPad?0 Mine is 16GB, the size of an intermediate SD card.

You can get those adaptors on ebay for a lot less. Of course, they are made in China, unlike Apple products, which are made in... Oh, wait a minute. :D
