I bought a used Canon sx50 on e-bay. It arrived an hour ago and much to my disappointment  I'm getting an error that reads
" memory card error". I know the card is good because it works in my Canon s95 and it also works with my laptop. Thinking maybe the card was bad I went to my local Staples store and purchased a new SD card. Still having problems, when I attempt to chose the format command it is "grayed" out and I cannot do a thing.

Am I missing something or has anyone else had this problem?

Have never had that problem. Try to format the card on the computer, then in the camera. Be sure the "lock" switch isn't getting bumped when you insert the card.

If that doesn't work, maybe that is why it was being sold????

Also would be a good idea to go into the menu and RESET to Factory Defaults.

1. reset the camera to factory default settings (instruction manual)

2. Format all new cards.

3. Did you ask the most important question before buying "is it in perfect working order"

4. Did it state "in perfect working order" on ebays listing

I did all but number 3!! DUH!!! shame on me! It won't let me format in the camera, I did put the card into my laptop and it formatted there no problem, I then put the card in my s95 and it formatted there without any problems. When I put the card back into the sx50 that's where the error happens.

Check the page that still exists for your purchase, ALWAYS print off pages you buy from, see this, does it say this

Does the format option on the camera offer a "low level format" option like the 60D, this is a SUPERB service most cameras don't offer some Canons do

There is no level format option.

I do have a copy of the original ebay ad and it states

specifics
Condition:
Used: An item that has been used previously. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor model or store return that has been used. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections. See all condition definitions

There's no where in the description that indicates it was for parts only or was not fully functional.

Based on that ad and your experience I would contact them immediately and request a return/refund.

JR1 that's helpful info, the real problem is when I scroll to the format option it is grayed out.

In the tools menu it reads :
Start up Image
Format (grayed out)
File Numbering

By the way the lock switch on the card is not in the lock position.

I have already contacted him, he has a no return policy. I'm waiting for a reply, if he does not reply or accept the return I will have ebay attempt to return my payment. If I don't get my money back I will tear him a new set of nostrils in the section where you can rate the seller.

Contact the seller. If you can't get satisfaction from the seller then go through eBay's resolution procedure.

You will have to return the camera to get your money back and it will cost you shipping back to the seller but that is better than losing all.

Thanks, the shipping is a small price to pay versus losing $310 the price I paid. Real shame since I love what I see in this little gem of a camera.

With the eBay Buyer Protection plan I do not think you would have any problems returning it. I have purchased from some sellers with that policy, but when I contact them indicating that it does NOT work correctly but the ad said it did, they quickly agreed to the return and refund! One of them was a smaller item and immediately refunded my money and said not to bother returning. You might have to return it so they can test it before refunding.

Based on that price and your experience, if you get your money back I would suggest going to Amazon or Best Buy and get a new one! Usually available for around 370

Wahawk your point is well taken, in the big picture $60 more is chump change so to speak.
