This must be possible (everything is), but I can't figure how to do it. I have a webcam that I would like to put by a front window so that I can view what it sees on my computer. I don't have a view out the window to see when the mail has come, etc. Aside from running a long wire, can I do that wirelessly?
I would guess, but only guess...that you can do it with a wireless usb hub...but that might be more expensive than a new camera.

I just thought that since I have this webcam, I could use it for something - maybe to see when the dogs are ready to come in. I also have one of those little license plate cameras that are waterproof and work wirelessly, so I might try that.
My son has a nanny cam. He views it on his computer but the quality is very poor. We thought the baby sitter was breaking in. hahaha. Get a good one.

From what I've read about the wireless cams, they can hog your home network. I think I'll see what I can do with wiring.
Dropcam.......... I have two and they work very well....Easy setup practically
automatic.....many features....

Thanks. I'll take a look.
I have a nice little wireless webcam from Amazon that I have inside of a bluebird nest box for monitoring hatchlings & feeding. Image quality is quite good, and wireless receiver hooks to computer via USB. Some cameras (like mine) are analog, so require a small digital signal converter between receiver and computer. Also, a big problem I've had with my Mac, although I understand some with PCs have this as well, is that my computer doesn't recognize the camera as an externally-connected device--so while I can, inexplicably, view live video on my computer screen, I can't send to my router for sending to other devices. (May not be relevant for you, though).

Don't bother with the wiring. The new Wireless IP Cameras form either Amazon or Ebay as referenced above, work on your home wireless network or can be used over the internet with their own IP Address. Just search with 'Wireless IP Cameras'.
I use one upstairs to keep an eye on the grand kids when they sleep over.
You can take snapshots or videos, not great quality, but also has IR to see in the dark. Mine also has 2 way audio, but it scares the hell out of my grand daughter, so we don't use that feature very often, but we can still hear her without talking.
I monitor on an Ipad program set up as a 'Baby Monitor', but my daughter or anyone with proper credentials can log in and see the kids on a special IP Address from any computer on the internet.
As for your concerns about 'tying up your home network', it has not been a problem here. We have 3 Ipads, desktop computer, wireless cable boxs (2) and a VOIP phone system , all on our home system wireless network and have not had any problems.
If your computer savvy, it not difficult to set up. If not, find a friend to help you.
The only issue is, if you want to use these cameras outside, make sure you get one that can be used outdoors. The camera needs a 12V, plug-in power source.
Hope this helps................ Fitznet

Thanks. What model do you have? I've heard that a live webcam can eat up bandwidth and slow down the home network.

I am pretty sure that something that is running contiunously on wireless is going to eat some bandwith...I am thinking that it would be simliar to downloading a program...that last 12 hours....
Do you have an old machine that you can dedicate to the task...then bite the bullet and run the wire...and disconnect from your network.
please keep in mind I have no idea...but its fun to speculate
