The P&S makers are certainly gaining my interest lately.
Hell no.
Having 3 DSLR Bodies I felt the need for a P&S So I bought a Canon G12, A friend introduced me to a Nikon P510 Bridge camera, 42X Zoom, 16MP.
REALLY LIKE that "toy" Camera.
IU do not know where or when this disease began. GEAR ENVY has been the bane of my existence.
Used to shoot Drag Racing, 2 35mm rigs w/motor drives, gave me 72 frame capability, with a "helper" to reload the cameras I could shoot all day.
Somehow after 100 f28 macro 70-200 f28. 100-400, 10-22, 18-200 glass and 3 bodies I find the need to have a list for my NEXT gear.
There is, unfortunately for my ilk, new goodies coming out all the time.
Come ONNNNNNNNNN Powerball

My trimming down consists of this:
Olympus E-PL5, purchased "refurb" from Olympus for $475 WITH the 14-42 M-Zuiko zoom.
My "downsizing" is also an E-PL5, factory refurb for $399 with lens. Downsizing from a bridge? Yes, it's smaller than my Kodak Z990. I still have my Kodak collection, and I'm still planning to take the Z990 to a concert in September - but wanted something sharper for serious stuff and missed interchangeable lenses for the past 2 1/2 decades. Also, my camcorder and bridge camera 37 and 58 mm accessories will fit the lenses, and my old C mount and Pentax Auto 110 lenses can be adapted.

This thread has been a game changer for me. .........So. I intend to buy the Panasonic FZ200 before our next vacation. It will be a relief in two ways: 1) much less to haul around on the plane, subways, buses, etc. and 2) much less of a theft or mugging target.
For travel cameras, don't leave out the Panasonic LX-7 or the Panasonic ZS30.

I still have two DSLRs and more lenses than I want to tell my wife about. And there are times that nothing but a DSLR will do - particularly when using a constant f/2.8 zoom. I still use DSLRs almost exclusively for product photography, but for the past few years have been using a P&S almost exclusively for travel.
We were in Paris a few years ago and had a two day pass on the Hop On-Hop Off bus system. I had a DSLR with me and my wife had a Fujifilm f100. It became very apparent climbing up to the upper deck of these buses multiple times that the DSLR hanging around my neck was detracting from my enjoyment of the sights.
Since then, I've carried a P&S exclusively on travel using airplanes or other public transportation and have not missed the DSLR.

If you still miss a long range zoom with constant F 2.8... the Lumix fz200 bridge camera will fill your needs and more... Check specs

Thanks for the recommendations. However, a viewfinder is a must because I'm not as steady as years ago so it's harder to keep the camera still without it touching my face . Intend to order the FZ200 the next few days along with the Pana ND filter, probably from Amazon because of their great service and return policy..
I read the review of fz200 l like it, only it is still bit expensive for me but may be in another six month it will go down
And don't forget the limited battery life.
Went to Ireland with only one battery. It died before noon and I didn't have a charger till that evening.
Thank goodness for the hard drive in my head.
Stay DSLR.

I don't know if you are refering to the Lumix FZ200, but if so, in my case I am able to take 400 to 500 photos with one fully charged battery. As a precaution, when venturing away from home for a photo session, I always carry a spare battery. When traveling, I bring 2 spares and a charger. I believe many would suggest a similar approach in order to avoid inconvenience or disaster.
I know...I know. Brain phart.
I learned the hard way.
It happened to me.You feel stupid when you have two batteries and you run out power In 2007 went to climb Snowdonia in Wales in hurry took the camera and second battery left in the bag which l left in the car so don't have to carry weight battery in camera finished after taking
130 photoes you can imagine reaching at the top and no pictures

Me too, 2 spares and a charger. On a recent trip to Toronto I took over 600 photos one day at the Toronto Islands, the best single birding day I ever had, from two Long Tailed Ducks to a bald eagle. Besides all the birds and the fantastic views and flowers, we saw and photographed some wild minks.

I doubt that the FZ200 will go down in price soon. It's a big seller. If anything, the price has gone up with no sales, rebates, or discounts I could find the past month. The Amazon price is now $549, but I read on one of the Amazon reviews that the reviewer had bought his/hers from Amazon for $519. For the difference in price, I'd rather be using it through the rest of the summer and autumn than wait.

Just received the FZ-200 this evening. Delivery was quicker then they promised and all is in the box: camera, lens cap and hood, battery and charger, two CD's, and a startup owners manual. It will be as much to learn as my D7000. Will post as I learn how to use it.
