Lens Calibration, never knew you did that

I just ran into an article on lens calibration, being a very amateur photographer, I never knew you calibrated your lenses.

Question is, how often do you do that and should it be done by a pro or factory or do it yourself. Does the lens really need calibration?

1) Lens calibration is not possible on ALL cameras - only some 'mid-range' and "pro" level cameras.
2) IF your camera supports it, and IF you have a lens that can be calibrated, you only need do it once per body/lens combination.
3) You can do it yourself - there are several tutorials on the web showing how. It's not difficult.
4) It's not a GIVEN that a lens will even need to be calibrated. Just because you CAN doesn't mean you have to.
5) From my research, I've found that 97% of all lenses do NOT need to be calibrated, and the rare one's that do are often the result of dropping or banging a lens, and throwing the optics out of whack just a little bit.

I don't believe the XSi offers lens calibration. So don't sweat it.

Me, too. 60 years is nothing, especially when you're on a forum like this and realize how little you know after all those years.

I just calibrated two of my lenses and I don't know why I waited so long. Makes a huge difference!

Just be aware that if you calibrate a zoom lens the calibration exists only for the setting used in the procedure.

I am curious: In your research, just how many lenses did you manage to test in order to arrive at the precise figure of 97% NOT requiring calibration? Certainly not 10 or 50... perhaps 100 lenses... 1000? What were the specific brands? Nikon, Canon...

My Nikon D7000 has auto focus fine tuning. I recently had to do this with a new 70-200mm f2.8 nikor lens. It shoots great now but was very disappointed with the results prior

In addition, some lens can be calibrated to the bodies they are used with by the vendor to alleviate such things as front or back focusing. I recently took my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens and Canon 60D body to Sigma's headquarters on Long Island to resolve a slight back focusing issue. Several newly designed Sigma lenses can now be calibrated using their new dock module.
