Did you flip the AF/MF switch to "AF"?
And, does AF work with the old lens?
I have the lens on my Canon and no problems. Send it back and get a new one as lens has a problem.

I was hoping that would be a last resort but it could well be the sensible action to take.
:-(
The only other thing I can think of is to mount it to another camera if that is feasible, then you will know for sure. But, since you mentioned that AF worked with other lenses on your camera, I'm guessing there is a problem with the lens.
Does your camera AF @ F6.3?

I have a Sony A200 and a Sony A57, I think i should have said NOT the auto focus but the zoom. I believe I have got it wrong.
My apologies to all who have answered so far

So.....What you really meant to say was that the new lens won't ZOOM?
Have you unlocked it?
Your new lens may have to af/mf switches, one on the lens and the one on your camera body. If its anything like my Tamron 90mm macro, you slide the zoom, or focusing ring forward or backward to switch the lens.
what about the instructions that came with the lens
I have one on my D-90 and D-7000 and they work flawlessly. Send it back for replacement/repairs. The Nikons have a AF/M switch on the body to the side of the lens mount, if yours does too, is it set to AF as well as on the lens?
Could the contacts on the lens be tarnished or dirty?
I just had a look at the lens on dpreview. You af/mf switch on the lens and on the camera. make sure both are switched to af. If it still doesn't work take it back and get it replaced or if used, repaired.
