newbie flower pictures

Hello,
With much anticipation and reservation I'm posting these pictures that I have taken. At the end of May is when i started learning the basics of photography and I'm VERY very much a beginner. I'm posting to receive constructive criticism I know I have a long ways to go but I have to start somewhere. Also i apologize ahead of time it has been exceptionally rainy here so most of my photos have water droplets on them I realize that it is a nice effect just didn't want you to think i was already in a rut when almost all of them have it. :) Thank you for looking and I look forward to your critiques.

looks to me like you are moving up the learning curve. the 3rd shot is particularly creative, a bit more DOF and it would be a very nice shot, stop down some and try it.

Could you please explain what DOF stands for I'm sorry I mean it when i say i'm VERY new !

Welcome to UHH I am learning also and there are alot of great people here who will be helpful. DOF is depth of field and if you click the search button above , type in DOF you will find lots to read :)

Love the pictures! I have some I've taken that I thought were good, but these are great.
DOF = Depth Of Field = the range in front of the lens that will be, or is supposed to be in focus, and is often shown in the DOF scale on your lenses. Higher f/stop = greater range that will be in focus, at the cost of lower light for the exposure. Wide open f/stop will give you a smaller range, such as the middle of a flower in focus, but the nearest and farthest petals are out of focus. 'Tis worth the time for lots of experimentation.

These are great shots, especially for one who classifies themselves as a novice. Since you are inviting critique, not criticism, I'll offer my limited insights.
For me, while the third shot contains detail, the subject frame is so close it gives the viewer very little perspective or clue as to what is being viewed. The shadows in the centre of the frame have the effect of cutting the picture into two sections. In general, you want the focal path to be the brightest part of the image. So in this case, I find my eyes wandering all over the frame, but never landing on anything in particular.
The 7th photo is very nicely composed, although I am distracted by the few random spider web lines. While the detail in this shot is excellent, the presence of just a few random spider web lines detracts from the over all shot. Perhaps the shot could have been made more interesting if there had have been more of the web, or a spider in action.
I LOVE the detail, depth of field, and focus of the 6th shot. The lighting, coloring, and balance of this shot are well captured. Looks like something we would expect to find in any quality publication!

Welcome! You've done well with your flower shots. One thing to remember for any photo is decide where you want the viewer's attention to be focused and make sure that spot is the sharpest point of the picture.
