Sometimes you simply have to get off the beaten path, tromp through the briers, wade across streams, climb over old fences, trudge up ragged ridges, slide down slippery slopes, pause to look around, and be amazed at the simple things that will fill your viewfinder.

NICE!!!!!!! I've been taking a watercolor class and I just painted from two photos of close-ups of a rusty hinge and a rusty ring/door opener on weathered wood. Your first photo reminded me of those and I am now inspired to find my own to take photos of to add to my watercolor collection! LOL!

LOVE the 'shrooms, too! They always are an interesting subject, to me! :O)

Hi WeeBGB, why don't you post some of your own "Off The Beaten Path" photos. I think we'd all love to see them. It sounds like you like the topic. And while we're on the subject, the fence post picture was one of the exceptions of it not being best shooting in direct sunlight. In this particular case if it hadn't been for direct sunlight, there wouldn't have been those subtle shadows in the weathered grooves of the fence post. I love being out in the bush, off the beaten path, standing quietly awaiting nature to come to me.

sounds like you get a lot of your photos the same way i do... just by poking around in out-of-the-way places where most folks never go (or look)... nice series!

The series is for anybody and everybody to post on, Mr(Mrs?) Squirrel. It doesn't matter if they've been posted in another string. And you're right, I do love straying off the beaten path. Sometimes you come across the most perplexing things. Like today, I saw a BIG pile of strange looking scat I couldn't identify. I looked it over a good little bit, scratching my head, and finally moved on. Not until I got back to my truck did I realize I didn't take a photo of it! DUHHH! I'm going back tomorrow and try to find it again.

Hi Gizzy: Love the photos. This fence looks like the fences on my grandpas farm. Cool photos. Cheryl

Well, those two photos I spoke of were not mine. The teacher gave them to me to paint. LOL! But I have taken some "off the beaten path" photos. Here's one of a mushroom I took in Fort Bragg, CA.

Now THAT was a very difficult focus to get, but you focused perfectly on the eyes of the sparrow, Janice!, a most important task in that particular setting. Nice work! Geepers, you're really getting the hangd of that SX30 IS, aren't you? How far did you zoom to get that shot?

Aww, Gizzy - you sure know how to make a gal feel like she is improving! You made me smile. That was a full 35x zoom.
And your bunny and deer shots made me jealous! I want to get a good deer photo so bad!

here are a few of my 'off-the-path' shots... i tend to spend a lot of time poking around in corners of the woods where people don't go, and often find some pretty nice pictures there - though mine tend to include streams or small waterfalls, stuff like that...

I wonder if that's one of those California hallucination mushrooms I hear they grind up and smoke out there? WOW! Wouldn't that be a rush?

WOW! Squirrel! Those shots belong on magazine covers, or on calendars... or on the Ugly Hedgehog!.. Oh... that's where we are, isn't it? All kidding aside, those are absolutely beautiful. Tell me about the camera setting. Full manual, or Shutter priority?
