Neat photos. The plant is a Spatterdock. It will not open any more than you see. In fact, this one seems to have already bloomed and dropped it's yellow petals which usually are just tight against the ball. Some turtles and birds, especially Galinuels and Moorhens really like the 'flower' part of this plant. They are also sometimes called a Yellow Pond Lily or a Yellow Cow-lily.
