I have been a professional photographer for about 42 years. I have done many weddings and other events. As I got older, I developed type 2 diabetes and extra pounds due to insulin. This is beginning to affect my event photography. In addition to low/high blood sugar, one of the effects I get is heavy sweating. I drip! Doesn't matter the temperature of the room, I get soaked. And it is embarrassing and I don't think it is very professional. The doctor didn't have any good ideas on how to control it. So the question is: do I need to give up event photography like weddings because of this problem sweating? Anyone else have a problem like this and what are your thoughts/solutions? It would not be disastrous to stop doing weddings as I don't depend on them for a living but there are of course other events that are affected. I hesitate to have brought this subject up but I know there must be others with a similar problem. What do you all do? Thanks
Steve

Have you tried an anti-prespirent? It helps with sweaty palms.

What a complex problem. My Dr. just told me I am PRE diabetic so I have been reading a lot lately. Here are some links that may at least offer some reason and some treatment. I truly hope you are able to continue your photography.

Ask your doctor about "Dry-Sol", which is a powerful anti-perspirant. Some people also use Botox in the palms, and there is even surgery which can be done for "hyperhidrosis" - but it is not done at very many places. Good luck with this.

I sympathize. Since your doctor didn't have a solution, and since it obviously bothers you, cutting back on you work schedule might be a good idea. The worry and embarrassment will cause stress over and above the stress of the job. With your experience, you should be able to find other jobs to replace the weddings and events. Consider your health and happiness.

I have been Type2 Diabetic for many years. I do not sweat.I suspect you are sweating because the Insulin has caused you to put on weight. It isn't easy but try to lose weight by strict dieting which is difficult I know with Insulin. If you can lose weight it will help with the sweat and be better for your BG control Don't give up.

Thanks for the suggestion but my palms are the least of the problem. Looks like someone poured a bucket of water over me. Steve

Yeah that would help. I am about 50 lbs overweight due to the insulin which in addition to helping store fat, makes you hungry. I do need to lose weight for sure so I guess in the meantime I will stop doing weddings and large events. Maybe that will be an incentive to lose but it sure will not be easy or quick. Thanks for the help and encouragement.

Thanks for the links. Got a lot of questions for the doctor now. Weightloss may be the only real solution but it is very hard for a diabetic to lose weight. Wish you well on your pre-diabetes. Diabetes can be lived with but you got to be strong about eating right and exercise. Thanks again

Insulin doesn't cause weight gain. Too many calories day in and day out cause weight gain - too much beer causes wt. gain too (still the calories!). Insulin controls blood sugar. Cut the calories, you will lose weight and diminish the need for insulin - and sweat less!

Steve, you may have already tried this but something that has made a big difference for me when working out in warm to hot weather is the right choice of base layers (what the kids today call underwear). Retailers like Dick's and Sports Authority have many under shirts and briefs that wick away moisture and keep you cooler. Nike has an entire line of under shirts, polo shirts and golf pants that wick away sweat, keep your skin dry and cooler. They come in conservative colors, I.e. black, white, so you can still maintain a professional look. If it works you could pack a change of clothes when moving from outside to inside photos.

Hi,

Really sorry to hear about your problems. I am a type 11 diabetic as well but am lucky in that I seem to be keeping my blood sugars below the trigger level . A lot of the problems have stopped.

I was lucky to go to nutritionist who suggested various supplements and avoiding gluten , low"ish" carbs and loads and loads of green leafy vegetables. It seems to have worked . Also "drink" green smoothies, veg, small amount of berries , aloe vera etc. It helps with the appetite. If you are interested in these just PM me.

It might just have been a coincidence but my sugar levels dropped considerably about a month after I started to take cinnamon as a supplement. Also take Co-enzyme Q10 and GTF Chromium, these are also suggested supplements for us lot.

Wish you well.
