I have an AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1:2.8G ED lens attached to a Nikon D700. A couple of specks are noticeable on clear sky in the pics. I can see the specks through the viewfinder. They are not on the glass outside. Therefore are they inside the lens and what is the best course of action please ?

Surely the specks cannot be on the sensor if they are visible through the viewfinder?

I had one, as well, on my Rebel (now sold). You could see it from either end of the lens when lens not attached to camera -- so it's definitely not the sensor. I just ended up cloning the speck from clear sky images :)

If you remove the lens can you still see them in the finder? If you remove the lens can you see them through the lens using a torch?

To be able to see them in the finder they would have to be as big as a pterodactyl.

Thank you Terra Australis.
Just removed the lens and the specks are still there through the viewfinder.

That is a good start. Definitely not pterodactyls then.

Now get a woman's makeup brush that has not been used and brush the underside of the focusing screen being careful not to touch the mirror.

I suspect that you have two unrelated problems;

1. dirt in the finder
and
2. dirt on the sensor.

Thank you Oliver. That's interesting. I am rather nervous of brushing anything inside the camera, but I could contemplate it after my next job.

Except for extreme cases, the only time dust inside the lens will make a difference is when you want to sell it.
