I am looking for the best foam to pad inside a bag to take my camera gear.
Anyone any idea which type of foam is best for absorbing impact and does not give of fumes that might affect lenses.
Either sheet form or block when I could cut out sections to fit my gear in
Thanks for your help

I don't know if this is any help breck but you can buy liners on evil-bay specifically for camera bags that velcro together, might be worth looking at those.

thanks will look, but was hoping there was an expert who could offer the best protection for the least weight and thickness .
Trying to squash in extra gear to an existing bag and make it better suited to my needs

Thanks crimsc324, I am sure it would but it is way too thick, I am sure there are better shock and impact absorbing materials out there
Not sure how much science goes into camera bad design and manufacture so hoping to gain some knowledge and have a go myself, reducing thickness is top priority for getting the gear onboard low cost flights as carry on

Out of interest, what exactly do you want to carry?

Rigid insulation. Not to flexible but certainly impact resistant. http://building.dow.com/na/en/products/insulation/rigidfoam.htm

I use closed cell foam which I obtain from camping shops in the form of sleeping pads. Comes in various thicknesses, is waterproof, works like memory foam so indentations come out.
Easy enough to work with and cut (does not crumble).

To any container I line with this I also add one or two sachets of silica gel. This is important for any long term storage - The closer the fit you make the lining the less ventilation there will be.

Hi cockney greg 24-70mm2.8, 70-200mm 2.8, 300mm f4, D800, plus all the bits and pieces, flash batteries, cards, filters etc.
Just want a bag i can get on a plane as carry on and work out of it, city and safari.
Do not want to go for a back pack impossible to work out of so thinking something like a Domke rearranged inside

Have you looked here....http://www.thinktankphoto.com/
I mean heck, no one makes a better bag, along with Domkee. If I couldn't find something between the two, I think I would fear more for my life... for the trip you seem to be embarking on. I respect you and your care for your gear...but there comes a point, Also Halliburton cases although hard. http://www.zerohalliburton.com/photography.html

Ondsnap, I have a think tank, just cannot fit the lenses and camera into my bags
JR1 just the opposite trying to find a way to protect my gear without so much padding
All my research leads me towards neoprene. I might try neoprene bags for each piece of equipment.
This is my second safari, and apart from dust your equipment sure takes a pounding
Thank you all for your help

I buy Domke padded inserts(from amazon)which fit into any bag.
For short trips I prefer the Domke F2 original. If I want to bring all my photogear I use a Saddleback leather duffle and put the Domke inserts into it. The bag is extremely tough and will last a lifetime(albiet it's expensive).

Not sure what kind of bag you have but I use OPTEC cases on most of my equipment, protects my gear in what ever bag or pack I choose to use that day,
Bob.
