I got my 100 mm macro lens last year in the fall and didn't have much time to use it on bugs. I've taken it out and sort of become "obsessed" with macro photography. I have a lot to learn and a lot to practice, but thanks to this macro forum, I've learned a lot!

Canon 5dmkII, 100 mm, f-20, ISO 100, 1/125 sec., Kenko extenders, Canon ring flash
Canon 5dmkII, 100 mm, f-20, ISO 100, 1/125 sec., K...

You're off to a great start! Just keep shooting - and whenever you have a question, just ask.

I really like the second one - the carpenter ant feeding on the syrphid fly. Nice job.

Up your shutter speed to 1/200 second, this will help with camera shake/subject movement, you may have to lower your ISO just a bit. Focus on the eyes and have fun shooting.

It's crazy. I never pick up my other camera with the long lens. And I never liked bugs. Now I am looking for them!!

Okay, I took your advice and it worked! I think this one is much better - 1/200, iso 50. Thanks so much!!!

Thanks sford. I think it's more than a "bug". I am obsessed with mastering this.

To compensate for a shorter shutter duration, options are to either increase the ISO, or increase the aperture.

The original exposure was ISO 100, 1/125-sec at f/20.
The second exposure was ISO 50, 1/200-sec at f/18.
I agree with decreasing shutter duration, but leave the ISO at 100, and increase the aperture to compensate (to f/16).
This will also lessen the "small aperture diffraction" I believe I see at f/20 & f/18.
