I'd like to hear from anyone who has upgraded to Photoshop CS6 from CS5. Worthwhile for straight photography (as opposed to design, advertising, etc.)?

CS6? Do you mean the new CC or Photoshop Creative Cloud?

I went from CS5 to CS6 not that big of a difference not worth the upgrade to me.

If you don't upgrade, you will never be able to get a more advanced version unless you go "into the cloud." You can find comparisons of CS5 and CS6 online. I have CS6, and this will be my last Photoshop. So, it's not so much a matter of there being enough improvements to justify the upgrade. It's your last chance to upgrade.

In the past, skipping an upgrade or two might jeopardize your ability to upgrade, rather than buying the product outright. Now it's a question of staying with CS5 or CS6.

I agree. I have CS6 but CS5 does everything I need.

I've seen the online material. That's why I posed the question. Doesn't seem worth upgrading. And I don't think I like the cloud.

I have CS6 and had CS5. For what you suggested you do, don't bother. Not worth the money.

I think most non-pros will rely more on LR or other programs, while pros or serious amateurs will use the Creative Cloud.

I don't like the idea of depending on network servers to provide an application--which I'm guessing is what happens with the "cloud." I'd rather depend on fewer links. And that's experience talking.

When I attempted to download (with payment made) a later version of Photoshop, I was told (in the download instructions) to delete the earlier version first. NO WAY, I had the earlier version installed for me when I had a new hard drive. Is it imperative to un-install the earlier version? Some posters seem to indicate that they run more than one version.

Nonsense. I've never uninstalled an older version first. Sometimes, I just leave them both on a computer.

Only upgrade if you want the last CD version of PS. Some of the tools have improved alot like the quick selection tool and content aware auto fill, but if you don't do a lot of fancy stuff it is not worth it. The HDR has gotten better also, but it is mainly the presets. If you tweak and do custom HDR it does not matter.

It is well worth it, but now you have to have a payment per month extorted out of your bank account to use it.

See my rant in the PS Cloud Version topic.

Delete only after making a copy of the installation dmg (if Mac user) to a DVD. Whenever I upgrade any program, I always write the installation dmg and a pdf version of the receipt to a DVD just in case I have to do a reinstall.

I also keep a table with all new and old serial numbers of all installed programs. Keep both an electronic version on my Mac and a paper version. Just call me paranoid.

HTH
